About Mount Athos

Why Mount Athos (Holy Mountain)?

Mount Athos (Άθως) is the third finger of Halkidiki - an autonomous monastic republic that has existed for over a thousand years, with 20 monasteries and UNESCO status. Athos is not a tourist destination in the usual sense - it is a pilgrimage place for men with a Diamonitirion permit, and a cruise object for everyone else (including women, who are forbidden to set foot for 1,000 years). A visit to Athos in 2026 is for travellers who value spiritual experience and Orthodox history.

The character is ancient and religious. The Athos finger is 50 km long, with Mount Athos (2,033 m) at the southern tip. Monasteries are spread along the coast - some medieval Greek, some Serbian (Hilandar - Serbian monastery founded in 1198 by St. Sava), some Russian. It differs from other Greek destinations in the absence of tourism, hotels, beaches - everything is religious in character.

Position: northern Halkidiki, access via the port of Ouranoupoli (the only departure point). Thessaloniki airport 130 km northwest.

Beaches and the sea (from a cruise perspective)

The Athos finger has dramatic bays with non-tourist beaches. On cruises you see:

Athos bays - small sandy beaches inaccessible from land, small monasteries behind, dramatic cliffs.

Mount Athos (from the sea) - the highest point of the finger, 2,033 m, visible throughout the cruise on clear days.

Monasteries from the sea - Great Lavra (the oldest, 963 AD), Pantokrator, Iviron - with powerful fortifications above the sea.

During cruises boats do not approach the monasteries closer than 500 metres (by law), but the monasteries are clearly visible from the deck.

Where to stay

Athos is not a regular stay destination. There are two options:

Stay in a monastery (men only) - with a Diamonitirion permit (4-day permit, requested 6 months ahead). Monasteries offer free accommodation and food to pilgrims, with Orthodox liturgies and strict rules.

Stay in Ouranoupoli - the secular town at the Athos entrance, with hotels and apartments. The launch point for cruises and pilgrimages.

For Ouranoupoli stay details, browse all current Ouranoupoli listings.

Getting there

  1. Belgrade–Thessaloniki flight (1 hour 15 minutes), then a 2.5-hour car transfer to Ouranoupoli.

  2. By car from Belgrade to Ouranoupoli - 830 km, 10 to 12 hours.

  3. From Ouranoupoli:

    • Coastal cruise (women + men): departs 9 a.m., 8 hours
    • Diamonitirion permit (men only): 1 to 4-day monastery stay

Best time to visit

April–October for cruises. May–June and September are best for weather (less heat, clearer views).

Winter has a particular beauty with snow on Mount Athos, but cruises are limited.

Things to see and do

Mount Athos coastal cruise - a full-day boat trip from Ouranoupoli, with stops at small beaches, lunch on board, views of the monasteries. 35 to 75 € per person.

Hilandar Monastery - the Serbian monastery founded in 1198 by St. Sava of Serbia. Only men with a permit may set foot.

Great Lavra - the oldest Athos monastery, 963 AD.

Vatopedi - the second largest, with famous relics.

Iviron - the Georgian monastery with frescoes.

Mount Athos peak - climbing to the summit (men with a permit only).

Pricing - what to expect

Cruise: 35 to 55 € per person (half-day), 55 to 75 € (full day with lunch).

Diamonitirion permit: 25 € + free monastery stay (with donation).

Accommodation in Ouranoupoli: a four-person apartment is 40 to 95 € per night in shoulder, 65 to 135 € at peak.

Frequently asked questions

Can women visit Athos? Only by sea (cruises). Setting foot on Athos itself has been forbidden to women for 1,000 years (Avaton - the law of Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos from 1060).

How do I get a Diamonitirion permit? Write to the Pilgrim's Office of Holy Mount Athos in Thessaloniki, 6 months in advance. The limit is 10 foreign visitors a day + 100 Orthodox pilgrims. The permit allows 4 nights in a monastery.

Can I visit Hilandar (the Serbian monastery)? Yes, with a Diamonitirion permit, like any male pilgrim. Hilandar is the main destination of Serbian Orthodox pilgrims.

What is the difference between a cruise and a stay? A cruise is a daytime boat trip along the coast (everyone). A stay is 1 to 4 days in a monastery (men with a permit) with liturgies, food and the rules of monastic life.

Is it worth travelling that far? For Orthodox pilgrims - definitely, a unique religious experience. For travellers who value culture - the cruise is impressive regardless of faith.

Questions & answers

Mount Athos - frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Mount Athos?

May and October are ideal for a quieter holiday with warm sea and no crowds. June and September offer the best value - temperatures up to 30°C, sea 23–25°C, and accommodation 30–40% cheaper than August. July and August are peak months.

How do I get to Mount Athos?

Driving is the most flexible option - most Greek destinations are 7–9 hours from Belgrade via North Macedonia (Preševo–Evzoni border). Regular flights serve Thessaloniki, Athens, Corfu, Crete, and Rhodes, with onward bus or rental car connections.

What is there to do in Mount Athos?

Mount Athos offers variety: blue-flag sandy beaches, local tavernas with fresh fish and mezedes, charming villages with traditional architecture, and excursion options (boat trips, ATV, hiking). Hosts on the ground share specific tips for each destination.

What are the beaches like in Mount Athos?

Beaches are mostly organised (sunbeds + umbrellas €8–15/day) with some quieter unspoiled stretches nearby. Most are sandy or pebbly with crystal-clear water. Many hold the Blue Flag (a quality mark for water and management).

How much does a vacation in Mount Athos cost for a family of 4?

Driving + booking directly from owners: €1,500–2,500 for 10 days (accommodation + food + fuel + tolls). Package tour with flights: €2,500–3,500. May and October are cheapest; August is most expensive.
