About Nea Roda

Why Nea Roda?

Nea Roda is a smaller resort on the northern Athos finger, 3 km west of Ierissos. Defined by a long sandy beach and exceptional quiet - even at peak season the crowds are modest. A Nea Roda holiday in 2026 is for travellers who want authentic northern Halkidiki without tourist development.

The character is dramatically calm. Nea Roda has around 800 permanent residents; a fishing tradition, a small centre with a few tavernas and a mini-market, plus apartments in 2 to 3-storey houses along the coast. No nightclubs, no animation programmes. Ideal for couples and families who value peace.

Position: 25 km from Ouranoupoli (port for Athos), 130 km from Thessaloniki, with access to the Athos mountains.

Beaches and the sea

The main Nea Roda beach is sandy, almost 3 km long, with pines behind. The water is turquoise, shallow, calm. Blue Flag is regularly awarded to the central section.

Beaches nearby:

  • Ierissos (3 km east) - a longer beach, similarly quiet
  • Ouranoupoli (25 km south) - the Athos gateway, with a family beach
  • Olympiada (15 km west) - a sandy beach by Aristotle Park

The Strymon gulf water is clean thanks to low tourism density. Snorkelling is excellent at the rocky sections of the beach.

Where to stay

Nea Roda centre along the beach - apartments in family houses. Walking distance to everything.

Northern and southern ends of the beach - more quiet, fewer facilities.
