About Thessaloniki
Why Thessaloniki (Central Macedonia)?
Thessaloniki is Greece's second-largest city and the cultural centre of northern Greece - UNESCO early Christian monuments, Byzantine walls, the White Tower, the largest square in Greece (Aristotelous), and a culinary scene that rivals Athens. Central Macedonia as a region includes the city, seaside suburbs (Perea, Agia Triada), and the mainland toward Halkidiki. A Thessaloniki holiday in 2026 is for travellers who want an urban-cultural stay with beach access.
The character is urban. Thessaloniki has around 1 million residents in the wider area, with three universities, concerts, museums and a developed restaurant scene. It differs from beach destinations (Pieria, Halkidiki) in its focus on culture and the city. For a primary beach holiday, the suburbs of Perea and Agia Triada (15 km southeast of the centre) offer a sandy beach with access to the city by city bus in 20 minutes.
Position is strategic for exploring all of northern Greece: 80 km from Pieria, 70 km from Halkidiki, 60 km from Vergina, 160 km from Kavala.
Beaches and the sea
The Thessaloniki centre has no city beach - the nearest are the suburbs:
Perea (20 km southeast) - a long sandy beach next to the airport, city bus N5/N6 from the centre (20 min, 1.5 €).
Agia Triada (25 km southeast) - smaller, quieter, family beach.
Halkidiki is 60–90 minutes by car - Kassandra (Hanioti, Pefkohori) and Sithonia (Sarti) are standard day trips for swimming.
The water in the Thessaloniki gulf is calm but quality is lower due to port proximity. For "quality" swimming - Halkidiki.
Where to stay
Thessaloniki centre - urban hotels and apartments along pedestrian zones, restaurants and cultural sites. For travellers who value culture over the beach.
Ladadika quarter - a gastronomic area with small restaurants and cafés, boutique hotels in historic buildings.
Perea and Agia Triada - seaside suburbs with city access by bus. Combining beach and city without changing accommodation.
Kalamaria (northwest of the centre) - a more modern part with a marina, less touristy.

Frequently asked questions
Is Thessaloniki suitable for a beach holiday? Not as a primary beach holiday - the city beach Perea is not Halkidiki quality. Thessaloniki is for a cultural-urban stay; for the beach, combine with a Halkidiki day trip or choose Pieria/Halkidiki as the primary base.
What is the difference between Perea and Halkidiki? Perea is a city suburb with city access (20 minutes), but water quality is not at Halkidiki levels. Halkidiki is the primary beach destination with developed tourist infrastructure.
Is renting a car worth it? For staying in the city - no (traffic, parking issues). For day trips to Halkidiki, Vergina, Olympus - yes.
Are there direct flights from Belgrade? Yes, year-round. Air Serbia, Wizz Air, Aegean. Thessaloniki is well connected to other EU cities too.
Best time for a Thessaloniki visit? May–June and September–October for cultural stays. July–August are hot, but focus on air-conditioned museums and evening walks.
