Why Perea?
Perea is a seaside suburb of Thessaloniki, 20 km southeast of the city centre, on the southern shore of the Thermaic gulf. Defined by a long sandy beach, proximity to the airport (Makedonia, SKG, 10 km) and the possibility of combining city and beach without changing accommodation - Thessaloniki by day, grilled fish in a Perea taverna in the evening. A Perea holiday in 2026 is for travellers who want both worlds without moving rooms.
The character is dual: a quiet seaside suburb by day, lively in the evening with restaurants and bars that host visitors from the city centre coming for dinner. Perea is 15 minutes by city bus from Thessaloniki or 10 minutes by car - that makes it an ideal base for travellers who value culture alongside the beach.
It differs from Halkidiki in being close to the metropolis (Thessaloniki has 1 million people, three universities, concerts and museums). It differs from central Thessaloniki by having a sandy beach.
Beaches and the sea
The main Perea beach is sandy, about 3 km long, running along the airport runway line into the centre of Perea. The water is generally calm because the bay is sheltered, but the quality is lower than in Halkidiki due to proximity to the city. The central section is organised; the edges toward Agia Triada are quieter.

- Nea Mihaniona (10 km south) - a fishing village with sandy beaches
- Halkidiki centre (50 km southeast) - Nea Moudania, Kallithea (40 minutes by car)
The water in the Thermaic gulf is not the cleanest in the Aegean - proximity to the port and industry affects quality. Blue Flag is not standard for Perea, but the beaches are acceptable for swimming. For "better" water - Halkidiki.
Where to stay
Perea centre along the seafront promenade - apartments in residential buildings with views over the bay. Walking distance to everything - tavernas, cafés, beach. Prices in the middle between Kassandra and the economical villages.
Aretsou (3 km closer to Thessaloniki) - a more modern part of the suburb with buildings and a marina. Picked for travellers who want to be closer to the city than the beach.
Agia Triada (5 km south) - quieter, more family apartments, less urban ambience.

Getting there
Perea is the most easily accessible Halkidiki-area destination - 10 km from the airport:

By car from Belgrade - 710 km, 8 to 10 hours. A1 motorway to Thessaloniki, then south on the Thessaloniki Ring Road to the Perea exit.

Best time to visit
May - cool, sea 18–20 °C, land 22–26 °C. A typical moment for weekend trips from the Balkans.
June - summer mode. Sea 21–23 °C, land 26–30 °C.
July and August - peak. Sea 24–25 °C, land 30–34 °C. Perea is full of locals "summering" on their doorstep.
September - best for travellers who want a mix of culture and quiet. Thessaloniki's cultural seasons (festivals, concerts) start while the beach is still warm.
October - first half good. Thessaloniki can be visited year-round.
Things to see and do
Thessaloniki - a full-day trip. The White Tower, Aristotelous Square, the Byzantine walls, the old town of Ano Poli, restaurants in the Ladadika quarter. 15 minutes by city bus from Perea.
Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum - one of the richest in Greece, with Macedonian gold from Vergina and other sites.
Vergina (60 km west) - an archaeological site with the tombs of Macedonian kings, including Philip II (father of Alexander). A UNESCO site.
Kassandra–Halkidiki - a day trip to the sandy beaches (40 minutes by car). Perea is geographically close to Halkidiki - popular with travellers who want the best of both.
Mount Olympus (90 km southwest) - Greece's highest mountain, with a national park and hiking tours.
Dimitria Festival - a Thessaloniki cultural festival every October, with theatre, concerts and exhibitions.
Pricing - what to expect
Accommodation: a four-person apartment is 45 to 95 € per night in shoulder, 65 to 135 € at peak. Three or four-star hotels in Perea and Aretsou from 70 € per person with breakfast.
Weekly cost per person: 300 to 460 € shoulder, 440 to 650 € peak. Thessaloniki is a day trip with no additional transfer.
Restaurant prices: main course 8 to 14 €, salad 4 to 6 €, glass of wine 3 to 5 €. Perea has good traditional tavernas with fresh fish - a popular evening destination for Thessaloniki locals.
City bus to Thessaloniki: 1.5 € one way. Taxi 12 to 18 €.

Is the water in Perea good for swimming? Acceptable but not ideal - proximity to the industrial port has an impact. For "quality" swimming, Halkidiki is recommended as a day trip. Perea is more for day beaches than for a primary holiday focus.
How do I reach Thessaloniki quickly? City bus N5/N6 - 20 minutes, 1.5 €. Taxi - 10 minutes, 12 to 18 €. Own car - 10 minutes along the coast.
