About Kassandra

Why Kassandra?

Kassandra is the first (western) finger of Halkidiki - the most densely touristically developed part of northern Greece and a decades-long favourite of Balkan families. Pine forests with pines down to the sand, sandy beaches with wooden jetties, hotel complexes and lively resort centres like Hanioti, Pefkohori, Kallithea, Sani - Kassandra is the definition of "classic Greek holiday" for the Balkan market. A Kassandra holiday in 2026 combines practicality (short drive from the Balkans, road access) with developed tourist infrastructure.

The character is family-oriented and accessible. Kassandra has around 17,000 permanent residents, but in summer it multiplies 8 to 10 times. The peninsula is 50 km long, with varied places - from luxury Sani in the north, through family-oriented Hanioti and Pefkohori in the centre, to quiet Posidi and Nea Skioni in the south. It differs from Sithonia (the second finger) in significantly higher tourist density.

Position: 70 km from Thessaloniki (90 minutes by car), 30 km from the Halkidiki entrance.

Beaches and the sea

Kassandra has over 70 km of coastline, almost entirely sandy with shallow water entry.

Top beaches:

  • Sani Beach - white sand, private beaches of the resort hotel, yacht marina
  • Hanioti beach - 1.5 km of sandy beach with organised bars
  • Pefkohori beach - similarly developed, neighbouring village
  • Kallithea beach - sandy with pines
  • Posidi sandy spit - a sandy strip projecting into the sea, one of Kassandra's prettiest
  • Nea Fokea - quieter northern beach

The Toroneos–Thermaic gulf water is calm and warm. Blue Flag on dozens of beaches.

Where to stay

Sani (north, 30 km from the entrance) - a luxury resort complex with private beaches, premium prices.

Hanioti and Pefkohori (centre) - family packages with pedestrian zones, supermarkets, restaurants. The most popular choice for Balkan families.

Polychrono and Kallithea (centre) - family apartments in smaller villages.

Afitos (north) - a traditional village with stone architecture, boutique stays.

Posidi and Nea Skioni (south) - quieter, with the prettiest beaches at the tip.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Kassandra and Sithonia? Kassandra is more densely developed for tourism (more hotels, restaurants, animation, supermarkets). Sithonia is quieter, greener, focused on villas and private apartments. Kassandra for those who want facilities; Sithonia for those who want quiet.

Is Hanioti the densest in the Kassandra centre? Yes, the Hanioti main street is walkable with restaurants, bars and shops densely arranged. For quiet - Posidi or Afitos.

Is Sani worth the extra cost? For travellers who want a premium hotel-resort experience - yes. For those who want authentic Greece - Afitos or Posidi.

Is renting a car worth it? Yes, for exploring the whole peninsula and Halkidiki. Without a car you stay tied to one place, which is fine for 5 to 7 days but not longer.

How do I reach Posidi sandy spit? A car is recommended. From Hanioti 20 minutes south. Local buses are infrequent.
