About Afitos

Why Afitos?

Afitos is a traditional cliff-top village on Kassandra (Halkidiki), about 80 km south of Thessaloniki. It differs from the rest of Kassandra in atmosphere - instead of modern hotel complexes, it has 18th and 19th-century stone houses, cobbled lanes, a small market, and a clifftop view over the Aegean. An Afitos holiday in 2026 is for travellers who value architecture and authenticity as much as the beach.

The character is boutique and Mediterranean. Afitos is designated a "traditional settlement" under state protection - new buildings are built in the style of the old ones, with stone facades, wooden balconies and tile roofs. It hosts some of the loveliest tavernas in Halkidiki, with terraces overlooking the Aegean.

It differs from Hanioti and Pefkohori in lacking dense beach infrastructure - Afitos is more for travellers who want evening walks through the village plus short beach visits.

Beaches and the sea

Afitos sits above the coast, with the beaches 1 to 3 km below the village:

Afitos beach - sandy, calm, with a few waterfront tavernas. Accessible on foot (15 minutes downhill) or by car.

Glarokavos - a smaller beach with pines, quieter. Access by car.

Kallithea (5 km north) - a longer beach, more organised, with hotels behind.

Possidi (15 km south) - a sandy "tongue" into the sea, one of the prettiest beaches on Kassandra.

The water is turquoise and calm, as in the rest of Halkidiki. Blue Flag on the central beach. The Afitos beaches are not the main draw of the destination - the village is. Pick it if you enjoy sleeping in a stone house, walking through lanes, dining with a view, with the beach as a day target.

Where to stay

Afitos centre - stone houses with traditional charm, boutique hotels and private villas. Walking distance to every taverna and the market. A car for the beach.

Village edge - more modern apartments with sea views. Less atmosphere, but closer to the beach.

Villas inland - stone houses on smaller hillsides, with private pools and views. A car is essential.

Getting there

Afitos is part of Kassandra, accessed via Thessaloniki:

  1. Belgrade–Thessaloniki flight (1 hour 15 minutes), then transfer or car rental. From Thessaloniki to Afitos is 85 km, 75 minutes by motorway to Kassandra and then locally.

  2. By car from Belgrade - 750 km, 8 to 10 hours. The standard route through North Macedonia and Thessaloniki, then A1 to the Halkidiki exit, a local road to Kassandra.

  3. Direct bus from Belgrade to Kassandra, getting off at Polychrono (5 km from Afitos) or Kallithea, taxi to the village. Return fare 70 to 100 €.

Best time to visit

May - cool, sea 18–20 °C, land 22–26 °C. The village looks its prettiest in spring with flowers on the balconies.

June - summer mode. Sea 21–23 °C, land 26–30 °C.

July and August - peak. Sea 24–26 °C, land 30–34 °C. The village fills with evening visitors, restaurants need booking.

September - excellent month. Sea 23–25 °C, land 26–29 °C, fewer crowds, prices ease.

October - first half warm, second half slides into off-season. Many restaurants close.

Things to see and do

Old Afitos - a walking tour through the village, with old stone houses, small churches and a folk architecture museum. 1 to 2 hours of easy walking.

Possidi and the tip of Kassandra - 15 km south, a sandy "tongue" into the sea. The prettiest spot on Kassandra.

Mount Athos cruise - a full-day boat trip from Polychrono or Skala Fourkas (10 km from Afitos).

Sani Beach Hotel complex - 25 km northwest, the largest resort complex on Kassandra with a private marina (not for staying, but a popular day trip for travellers who want the resort experience).

Petralona Cave (50 km northwest) - a prehistoric cave with fossils, guided tours available.

Thessaloniki day trip - 85 km, culture, restaurants, markets.

Afitos local festival - late July, with music, traditional food, and the opening of old houses to visitors.

Pricing - what to expect

Accommodation: a stone house for four is 80 to 160 € per night in shoulder, 120 to 220 € at peak. Boutique hotels with breakfast 110 to 180 € per room. Apartments on the edge 50 to 110 € per night.

Weekly cost per person: 450 to 700 € shoulder, 650 to 950 € peak. Afitos is the premium price segment of Kassandra due to its distinctive architecture and boutique atmosphere.

Frequently asked questions

How is Afitos different from the rest of Kassandra? Afitos is a traditional village under state protection, with 18th/19th-century stone architecture. The rest of Kassandra is more modern, with hotels and apartments in contemporary style. Afitos is for atmosphere; the rest of Kassandra is for the beach.

Is Afitos suitable for babies and small children? The village yes - safe, quiet, lovely walks. The beach is 15 minutes downhill on foot or 5 minutes by car - less suitable for travellers who want the beach right out the door.

Is renting a car worth it? Yes. Without a car the beach is a daily effort (uphill back in the evening with children is hard). With a car Afitos is an excellent base for exploring all of Kassandra. Rental 30 to 50 € per day.

What is the difference between Afitos and Sani? Sani is a resort hotel complex (private beaches, marina, waterfront restaurants) - premium but uniform. Afitos is a traditional village with varied accommodation and authentic atmosphere. Sani is for the hotel experience; Afitos for a stay in Greece.

Are restaurants in Afitos more expensive? Yes - premium traditional atmosphere comes at a price. Main course 12 to 20 € instead of 8 to 14 € in Hanioti. Worth it for special-occasion dinners, less so for everyday food.
