About Stavros

Why Stavros?

Stavros is a small resort northwest of Halkidiki, on the Strymon gulf of the Aegean, about 130 km from Thessaloniki. Less known than the large Halkidiki centres, but a favourite among Greek and Balkan families for decades thanks to its shallow sandy beach, calm harbour and authentic fishing atmosphere. A Stavros holiday in 2026 is for travellers looking for a Greek coast without dense tourism.

The character is family-oriented and locally focused. Stavros has around 1,500 permanent residents and triples in summer, but it keeps the feel of a fishing village - small waterfront tavernas, a local bakery, one main street, and quiet daily activity by fishermen returning from the early morning. Many families return year after year.

The position is good: day trips to Thessaloniki (90 minutes), Mount Olympus (90 minutes) and Halkidiki (40 minutes). Stavros is also a good base for the Strymon river and the surrounding mountain villages.

Beaches and the sea

The Stavros beach is the main draw - sandy, shallow, with wooden jetties extending into the sea. The water is turquoise and calm, ideal for small children. The beach is 2 km long, organised in the central section, free at the edges.

Beaches nearby:

  • Vrasna and Nea Vrasna (5 to 10 km east) - longer sandy beaches, less tourist density
  • Asprovalta (15 km east) - a larger resort with developed beach infrastructure
  • Olympiada (35 km south) - back into the Halkidiki gulf, quiet

The water in the Strymon gulf is generally slightly cooler than Halkidiki (more open to the north) - 22 to 24 °C at peak instead of 25 °C. Blue Flag designations are standard in the central section.

Where to stay

Stavros centre along the harbour and beach - apartments in two-storey houses, small family-run hotels. Walking distance to everything. Not noisy at night (no clubs).

Northern and southern ends of the beach - fewer buildings, more free sand.

Villas inland - less common than in Halkidiki, but a handful of listings exist in the hills above Stavros.

Getting there

Stavros is accessed from Thessaloniki:

  1. Belgrade–Thessaloniki flight (1 hour 15 minutes), then transfer or car. From Thessaloniki to Stavros is 90 km, 90 minutes by the A2 motorway toward Kavala, the Asprovalta exit, then locally.

  2. By car from Belgrade - 800 km, 9 to 11 hours. A1 motorway to Thessaloniki, then A2 toward Kavala, exit for Stavros.

  3. Local bus from Thessaloniki - KTEL Serres, several daily departures, 90 minutes, 10 to 13 € per person.

Direct buses from Belgrade to Stavros run seasonally but less often than Halkidiki services - a transfer in Thessaloniki is typical.

Best time to visit

May - cool, sea 17–19 °C, land 22–25 °C. A quiet destination, half the tavernas closed.

June - the season starts. Sea 20–22 °C, land 25–29 °C. Local Greek tourism arrives.

July and August - peak. Sea 22–24 °C, land 28–32 °C. The Stavros centre is livelier in the evening, but not like Hanioti. The beach is full, but given its 2 km length there is always space.

September - excellent conditions. Sea 22–24 °C, land 25–28 °C, significantly fewer crowds. Prices drop 20 to 30 percent.

October - first half warm and sunny, second half slides into off-season.

Things to see and do

Stavros Monastery - small Orthodox churches and chapels in the hills above the village. A local pilgrimage site.

Strymon river and delta - a marshland area north of Stavros, popular with birdwatchers (over 200 species). Walks or cycling trips from Stavros.

Ancient Amphipolis (15 km northwest) - a significant archaeological site with Alexander's "Lion of Amphipolis" - a giant marble monument. Recent excavations have uncovered a tomb linked to the Macedonian dynasty.

Olynthos acropolis (45 km south) - an ancient Greek colony, one of the best-preserved Hellenistic cities.

Thessaloniki day trip - 90 km, the White Tower, the old town, cultural events.

Olympiada and Aristotle Park - 35 km south, the birthplace of Aristotle, a small park with exhibits about the philosopher.

Pricing - what to expect

Accommodation: a four-person apartment is 35 to 80 € per night in shoulder, 55 to 115 € at peak. Three-star hotels with breakfast 55 to 85 € per person. Stavros is among the most affordable destinations in northern Greece.

Weekly cost per person: 250 to 400 € shoulder, 380 to 580 € peak.

Restaurant prices: main course 7 to 11 €, fresh fish 12 to 18 €, glass of wine 3 €. Stavros does not focus on tourist restaurants - most menus serve local visitors.

Sun beds with parasol: 5 to 10 € for a pair in the central section. At the ends - free.
