About Ouranoupoli

Why Ouranoupoli?

Ouranoupoli is the last secular town on the Athos finger - where the monastic republic begins. A small port town with a sandy beach, a yacht marina, and the central office for Athos access (Diamonitirion for men, cruises for women). An Ouranoupoli holiday in 2026 combines beach with spiritual tourism and one of the most distinctive experiences in Greece.

The character is dual. By day it is a quiet resort with families on the beach. In the morning and late afternoon it is the launching point for Athos - men with permits leaving for monasteries, cruise boats heading along the monastic coast. No aggressive nightlife, but plenty of restaurants oriented to travellers.

The position is at the end of the road: 155 km from Thessaloniki, at the very end of the route. The Thessaloniki airport is far, but transfers are well organised.

Beaches and the sea

The Ouranoupoli beach is sandy, about 1.5 km long, with calm water and shallow entry. Blue Flag is regularly awarded. In the background you see Mount Athos (2,033 m) - one of the most striking panoramas in Greek tourism.

Beaches nearby:

  • Drenia islets - a small archipelago 1 km off the coast, sandy beaches with crystal water. Access by boat (5 minutes, 5 to 8 € return).
  • Komitsa (8 km north) - a wild beach, less organised
  • Trani Ammouda - a small sandy beach north of the centre

The water is clean, with excellent snorkelling visibility around the Drenia islets.

Where to stay

Ouranoupoli centre along the harbour - apartments and hotels with direct sea access. Walking distance to everything.

Northern section - smaller hotels and villas with views of Athos.

Hills above the village - villas with private pools and panoramic views.

Frequently asked questions

Are women welcome in Ouranoupoli? Yes, Ouranoupoli is a secular town open to everyone. Only Athos (the monastic peninsula) is closed to women. From Ouranoupoli women may cruise along the Athos coast by boat.

What is the difference between Ouranoupoli and Ierissos? Ouranoupoli is the Athos launch point with a marina and Athos office. Ierissos is a quieter town to the north, with a better family beach. Ouranoupoli for the spiritual experience; Ierissos for just the beach.

Do I need a Diamonitirion to visit? Only if a man wishes to set foot on Athos (stay at a monastery). The coastal cruise (women + men) requires nothing, just a boat ticket.

Is renting a car worth it? Yes, for exploring the Athos finger (Ierissos, Olympiada, Stagira). A car makes the airport transfer easier.
