About Ierissos

Why Ierissos?

Ierissos is on the second finger of Halkidiki - Mount Athos - and the largest secular settlement on it. Mount Athos itself is a monastic republic closed to women and restricted for men; Ierissos is the secular alternative offering quiet, a long sandy beach and the atmosphere of a small fishing town where traditional life is still visible. An Ierissos holiday in 2026 attracts travellers looking for authentic Greece without the crowds of Kassandra and Sithonia.

The character is quiet and contemplative. Ierissos has around 2,500 residents, a fishing harbour, a sandy beach almost 3 km long and a handful of waterfront tavernas. No nightclubs, no animation programmes. It differs from the rest of Halkidiki in smaller tourist numbers - the Athos finger traditionally attracts older and more reflective travellers.

The position is good: 25 km from Ouranoupoli (the port for Athos), 130 km from Thessaloniki, with immediate access to the Athos mountains and the calm northern Aegean bay.

Beaches and the sea

The Ierissos beach is the main draw - finely ground sand, gentle entry, almost 3 km long. Even in shoulder season it can be practically empty on a Sunday afternoon - an unusual luxury on the Greek coast.

Beaches nearby:

  • Nea Roda (3 km northwest) - similar, smaller, with pines behind
  • Ouranoupoli (25 km south) - the best-known beach on the Athos finger, with a small harbour and the Athos contact point
  • Komitsa (2 km south of Ierissos) - less organised, wild, good for solitude

The water is clean, with fewer hotels behind (less pressure on the ecosystem). Blue Flag designations are regular. In the summer months the bay water is 24 to 25 °C - warmer than the open Aegean due to the shallow approach.

Where to stay

Ierissos centre along the harbour - family apartments and small hotels with direct beach access. Walking distance to tavernas and shops. Ideal for families.

Northern beach toward Nea Roda - apartments in smaller complexes, quieter than the centre.

Villas inland - stone houses on the hillsides, with views of Mount Athos (highest 2,033 m). A car is essential.

Nea Roda as an alternative - even quieter, the beach is smaller but just as pretty.

Getting there

Ierissos is part of Halkidiki, accessed via Thessaloniki:

  1. Belgrade–Thessaloniki flight (1 hour 15 minutes), then transfer or car. From Thessaloniki to Ierissos is 130 km, 2 hours by car via Polychrono and Stratoni.

  2. By car from Belgrade - 800 km, 9 to 11 hours. After Thessaloniki, the A1 motorway to the Halkidiki exit, then a local road through central Halkidiki to Ierissos. The last 60 km are not motorway.

  3. Bus from Thessaloniki - KTEL Halkidikis has several daily departures to Ierissos and Ouranoupoli. 2.5 hours, fare 12 to 15 € per person one way.

There are no regular direct buses from Belgrade to Ierissos - you usually transfer in Thessaloniki or central Halkidiki.

Best time to visit

May - cool, sea 18–20 °C, land 22–26 °C. Ideal for coastal walks and Athos excursions.

June - summer mode. Sea 21–23 °C, land 26–29 °C. A quiet start to the season.

July and August - peak, but Ierissos is not dense like Kassandra. Sea 24–25 °C, land 29–32 °C. The beach is full but never unbearable.

September - probably the best month for the Athos experience. Sea still 23–24 °C, land 26–28 °C, walking conditions excellent. Athos cruises often at their most beautiful.

October - first half still warm, second half slides into off-season. Athos in winter has a particular beauty (mountain snow).

Things to see and do

Mount Athos cruise from Ouranoupoli (25 km south) - essential for all visitors to the region. A half-day boat trip along the coast of the monastic republic, with stops at small beaches and lunch on board. Women may only approach by sea; men can obtain a traditional permit (Diamonitirion) for an overnight visit.

Ancient Akanthos - an archaeological site by the Ierissos beach, the remains of a city that existed from 700 to 300 BC. Free to wander, little-known but interesting.

Walking trails toward Athos - Ierissos is a starting point for several mountain paths toward areas reserved for the monastic community. A walk through pine and oak forests with views of the Aegean.

Stratoni Monastery - an Orthodox monastery in the hills west of Ierissos, with frescoes and quiet.

Olympiada (10 km north) - a smaller resort with a sandy beach and a fishing atmosphere. The specialty is fresh fish.

Local festivals - Ierissos holds traditional saint's-day celebrations (panigiri) through the summer, with music, dance and local food. The finest experience of rural Greek culture.

Pricing - what to expect

Accommodation: a four-person apartment is 40 to 85 € per night in shoulder, 60 to 125 € at peak. Three-star hotels with breakfast 60 to 95 € per person. Villas for six 90 to 160 € per night.

Weekly cost per person: 280 to 440 € shoulder, 420 to 620 € peak. Among the most affordable destinations in Halkidiki.

Restaurant prices: main course 7 to 12 €, fresh fish 12 to 22 € (check the per-kilogram price), glass of wine 3 to 4 €. Local tavernas in Ierissos are cheaper than in Kassandra and Sithonia.

Athos cruise: 30 to 45 € per person for half a day, 50 to 70 € with lunch.

Frequently asked questions

Are women welcome in Ierissos? Absolutely - Ierissos is a secular town, open to everyone. The restriction on women applies only to Athos itself (the monastic peninsula), not to Ierissos or Ouranoupoli. Women may only visit Athos by sea (cruises).

What is the difference between Ierissos and Ouranoupoli? Ouranoupoli is the departure point for Athos - smaller, with a harbour and a contact office for pilgrims. Ierissos is the larger town with better beaches and more facilities, but not a departure point for the pilgrimages.

Is Ierissos suitable for a young family? Calm beaches and shallow water entry are excellent for small children. The centre is not animation-driven (no nightlife or kids' clubs like in Kassandra). Picked by those who value quiet over programmes.

Is renting a car worth it? Yes, for any longer stay. Without a car you are tied to one beach; with a car you unlock Ouranoupoli for Athos, Olympiada, Stagira (Aristotle's birthplace) and the Athos approach.

How do I reach Thessaloniki quickly? By car is fastest (2 hours). Local bus is 2.5 to 3 hours, 12 to 15 € per person. For day trips to Thessaloniki a car is recommended.
