Vrachos, Kanali and Mytikas Holiday Guide 2027: Preveza Riviera Beaches, Prices, Getting There and Where to Stay

If you love the Ionian Sea but Parga is too expensive and crowded for July, look at the coast just south of it. From the mouth of the Acheron to Preveza runs the Preveza Riviera: the miles-long sandy Vrachos-Loutsa beach, the quiet family resorts of Kastrosykia and Kanali, the fish tavernas of Mytikas and the lively port town of Preveza with its sardines, waterfront and nightlife. The sea is as clear and turquoise as on the Ionian islands, but you drive right up to your door, no ferry needed.

Where the Preveza Riviera is

From north to south the coast runs like this: Ammoudia at the mouth of the Acheron, then Loutsa and Vrachos (one continuous beach), the little fishing harbour of Lygia, Kastrosykia, Kanali, the long wild beach of Monolithi, Mytikas and finally the town of Preveza at the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf. From Vrachos it is about 25 km to Parga (half an hour), about 35 km to Preveza and about 45 km to Aktion airport near Preveza.

Vrachos or Kanali: which resort to choose

Vrachos and Loutsa - the miles-long beach

Vrachos and Loutsa are two ends of the same beach: more than four kilometres of sand with a gentle slope into the sea, backed by a promenade, tavernas, beach bars and shops. It is the biggest and liveliest resort on the riviera and the safest pick for a first visit, especially with children: the beach is long enough to find a spot for your towel even in August, and everything is a few minutes' walk away. Kastrosykia - peace between rocks and sand

South of Loutsa and the fishing harbour of Lygia, Kastrosykia is a quiet village with a sand-and-shingle beach and small rocky coves, lovely for snorkelling. There is no mass tourism, so it suits couples and anyone who wants nothing more than a taverna and the sound of the sea in the evening. See Kastrosykia.

Kanali - a family resort on a long beach

Kanali lies some twenty kilometres north of Preveza, at the start of a long coastline that continues south as Monolithi. The beach is wide, sand and fine shingle, with hotels and apartments on the front line and a few beach bars. It is close enough to Preveza for evenings out and far enough to stay peaceful. Mytikas and Preveza - sea, fish and town life

Mytikas is a former fishing village about eight kilometres from Preveza, with a long shingle beach, crystal-clear water and tavernas serving fish caught the same morning; the sunsets are unforgettable. Preveza is a proper town: an old quarter of narrow lanes full of tavernas, a harbourfront promenade and the famous Preveza sardines. The best beaches from Ammoudia to Preveza

1. Vrachos-Loutsa - the riviera's longest organised beach; sand, shallows, lifeguards and every facility.
2. Ammoudia - a sandy beach at the mouth of the Acheron, where cold river water mixes with the sea; refreshing even in August.
3. Lygia - a small beach next to the fishing harbour, with tavernas a few steps away.
4. Kastrosykia - sand and shingle, coves and rocks for snorkelling.
5. Kanali - a wide beach with beach bars and room for everyone.
6. Monolithi - one of the longest beaches in Greece, about 20 km of sand and dunes, mostly undeveloped; for long walks and total peace.
7. Mytikas - shingle and crystal-clear water, ideal for swimming and sunsets.
8. Alonaki - a small sandy cove among rocks just outside Preveza, sheltered and family-friendly.

💡 The west-facing coast is open to the sea: mornings are usually calm, but in the afternoon the north-westerly maestro often picks up and brings waves. Things to do: from the underworld to Lefkada

• Acheron springs at Glyki - wade through an icy emerald river in a gorge, try beginner rafting, horse riding or kayaking. About 45 minutes' drive from Vrachos; bring water shoes.
• Necromanteion - the ancient "oracle of the dead" above the mouth of the Acheron, near the village of Mesopotamos, halfway to Ammoudia.
• Parga - half an hour to the Venetian castle, the promenade and the boats to Paxos and Antipaxos, the region's most popular boat trip.
• Lefkada - through the undersea tunnel near Preveza and across the causeway onto the island; Porto Katsiki and Egremni beaches make a good day trip. More in our Lefkada guide.
• Nicopolis - ruins of the Roman city founded by Octavian Augustus after the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, with a museum, seven kilometres from Preveza.
• Zalongo and Kassope - the monument to the women of Souli above the village of Kamarina (about 400 steps) and the ruins of ancient Kassope right next to it, with views over the whole coast.
• The Ambracian Gulf - boats leave Preveza to cruise the gulf, home to a resident dolphin population.
• Preveza by night - a stroll through the old quarter, meze and sardines in the tavernas and cafés by the harbour.

Getting there from Serbia

💡 Egnatia and Ionia Odos have several toll plazas, and the way to Aktion airport and Lefkada runs through the tolled undersea tunnel at Preveza. When to go

• June - sea around 23-24 °C, green landscapes, about half the August price; Serbian primary-school holidays start on 14 June 2027.
• July and August - sea 25-26 °C, everything open, the most guests from Serbia and Italy; book by spring.
• September - the warmest sea, quiet beaches and lower prices; the best choice for couples and guests without school-age children.
• Easter and May Day 2027 (30 April - 4 May) - a nice window for trips to the Acheron and Zalongo, but the sea is still cold for swimming.

The Preveza Riviera with children

• For small children the best choices are Vrachos-Loutsa (sand, shallows, lifeguards) and the sheltered coves around Alonaki.
• Wading through the shallow Acheron at Glyki is a favourite children's adventure; the water is cold even in August.
• Swim in the morning while the sea is calm, and pick a pool or an outing in the afternoon.

Practical tips

• Shopping: Vrachos and Loutsa have supermarkets, and there is a wider choice and a market in the small town of Kanallaki, about ten kilometres inland.
• A car is almost essential unless you stay in Vrachos or Preveza: the villages are spread out and the day trips are all worth it.
• Mosquitoes: near the Acheron estuary and the lagoons, bring repellent.

Frequently asked questions about Vrachos and the Preveza Riviera

How far is Vrachos from Belgrade?

About 880-920 km, realistically 9.5-10.5 hours with stops. The route to Ioannina is motorway all the way, via Skopje, Thessaloniki and the Egnatia, and the last fifty or so kilometres are on main roads.

Are Vrachos and Loutsa the same place?

Practically yes. Vrachos and Loutsa are the two ends of the same long sandy beach and the villages along it; Loutsa is the northern part, Vrachos the southern.

Vrachos or Parga - which to choose?

Parga is more picturesque and lively, but pricier and more crowded. Vrachos has a longer, wider sandy beach, more space and lower prices, and Parga is half an hour away for an evening stroll or the boat to Paxos.

Is the beach in Vrachos sandy?

Yes, mostly fine sand with a gentle slope into the sea, suitable for children. Further south, in Kanali and Mytikas, there is more fine shingle.

How much does accommodation in Vrachos cost?

In July and August 2027 a studio for two is roughly 40-60 € a night and an apartment for four 55-95 €. In June and September prices are a third lower or more.

Are there direct flights to Preveza from Belgrade?

There is no regular direct route. You fly on a charter as part of a package, via Athens to Aktion airport, or to Corfu and then by ferry to Igoumenitsa.

Is Kanali good for families?

Yes: a wide beach, apartments and hotels on the front line, quiet evenings and Preveza about twenty minutes away for a night out.

What is there to see near Vrachos?
