About Kanali

Why Kanali?

Kanali is a smaller resort in Epirus, about 8 km north of Preveza and 80 km south of Parga, on Greece's Ionian coast. A quiet village with sandy beaches and access to the Ambracian Gulf on the inland side, Kanali attracts travellers seeking a simple shoreline without an urban setting. A Kanali holiday in 2026 means proximity to Preveza airport and the option of a quiet stay with day trips to Parga.

The character is family-oriented and quiet. Kanali has around 600 residents, plus a wider summer settlement that doubles the population. Restaurants are local, the beaches are not organised to Halkidiki level but they are authentic - a typical Greek coast slowly developing.

The position is excellent: 10 minutes from Preveza airport (PVK), 60 minutes from Parga, 90 minutes from Sivota. Ideal as a base for exploring Epirus.

Beaches and the sea

The main Kanali beach is sandy, about 2 km long, with pebbles in the northern section. The water is turquoise and calm with shallow entry - good for families. The beach is partly organised - a few tavernas with sun beds, the rest free.

Beaches nearby:

  • Kanali Nord - an extension of the main beach, quieter
  • Monolithi (5 km south) - a 20 km long sandy beach, reputedly the longest in Greece. Mostly unorganised.
  • Mitikas beach (15 km north) - a long shore with pines

The Ionian water is warm, with good snorkelling visibility. Blue Flag is not standard for Kanali, but water quality is good.

Where to stay

Kanali centre along the beach - family apartments in two-storey houses, small guest houses. Walking distance to everything.

The edges - villas and houses in greenery, with private pools.

Mitikas (15 km north) - an alternative for travellers who want even more quiet.

Getting there

Kanali is 10 minutes from Preveza airport (PVK):

  1. Belgrade–Preveza flight (1 hour 30 minutes), seasonal June–September. Airport–Kanali transfer 10 minutes, 15 to 20 € by taxi.

  2. By car from Belgrade - 1,020 km, 11 to 13 hours. Borders Đevđelija, Evzoni. After Thessaloniki the A2 motorway to Ioannina, a local road to Preveza, then locally.

  3. Bus from Belgrade to Parga with a stop in Kanali during the season.

Best time to visit

May–June - cool, sea 19–22 °C, land 23–28 °C. Low crowds, ideal for couples.

July–August - peak, sea 23–25 °C, land 29–32 °C. Beaches full but never overwhelming (thanks to the 20 km Monolithi coast).

September - the best month. Sea still 23 °C, land 26–28 °C, significantly fewer crowds.

Things to see and do

Preveza - 8 km south, a town with an old fort, waterfront cafés and a marina. Evening walks are popular.

Ancient Nicopolis (10 km south) - a UNESCO archaeological site, the remains of the city founded by Octavian after the Battle of Actium. Free to wander, with a well-preserved amphitheatre.

Boat to Lefkada - 30 km south via the Aktion bridge, an island without a ferry. A day trip.

Ambracian Gulf - a marshy lagoon north of Preveza, dolphin and pelican spotting. Organised boat tours from Preveza harbour.

Acheron gorge - 50 km north, the mythological river and gorge, swimming and kayaking.

Weekly cost per person: 280 to 440 € shoulder, 420 to 620 € peak.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Kanali and Preveza? Preveza is the regional town centre with an old core, restaurants and a marina. Kanali is a smaller village by a long beach. Preveza for atmosphere; Kanali for resting.

How far is Parga? 80 km north, 90 minutes by car. Local buses run several times a day in season (15 to 18 € one way).

Is Monolithi really the longest beach in Greece? It is often quoted as such - 20+ km of unbroken sand. Quality exceeds many organised tourist beaches, but a car is needed to reach the best sections.

Is renting a car worth it? Yes, if you plan to explore Epirus. Without a car - tied to one beach. Rental 25 to 40 € per day at the airport.
