Parga in short

Parga is a coastal town in Epirus on Greece's western Ionian coast, climbing a hill above its harbour with a Venetian fortress at the top. The character is lively but not overwhelming, almost all accommodation is family-run apartments and small hotels, and families with small children get a turquoise sea, shallow beaches and short distances. Krioneri, the town beach, is a short sandy stretch with wooden jetties, and a full-day boat trip goes to Paxos and Antipaxos.

About Parga

Why Parga?

Parga is a coastal town in Epirus, on Greece's western Ionian coast, and it has been a favourite of Balkan travellers for decades. It climbs an amphitheatre of a hill above its harbour, with a Venetian fortress at the top and pastel stone houses descending to a turquoise sea. A Parga holiday in 2026 means combining a lively small town with waterfront tavernas and short drives to some of Greece's prettiest beaches.

The character is lively but not overwhelming. Parga has around 2,000 permanent residents; in season it triples, but the centre keeps the architecture of a small Mediterranean town - stone-paved pedestrian lanes, cafés around the harbour, tavernas on the water. It differs from large Halkidiki centres in lacking hotel complexes: almost all accommodation is family-run apartments and small hotels with 20 to 40 rooms.

The position is excellent - mainland access but with the aesthetic of an island sea and coast. From Parga you can reach Paxos by boat in half an hour, Corfu in 90 minutes. It works as a main base for exploring the Ionian without changing accommodation.

Beaches and the sea

Parga has three main beaches near the town. Krioneri is the town beach, a short sandy stretch with wooden jetties - most popular because it is a five-minute walk from the centre. The water in the Parga bay is turquoise and calm, ideal for children.

Valtos is the largest beach, 1.5 km long, with finely ground pebbles and pines down to the sand. Access is on foot over the hill (15 minutes with a great view) or by car on the longer road. Organised, with sun beds and tavernas.

Lihnos is south of Parga, a sandy beach next to a resort hotel, calmer with shallow entry. Ideal for families with small children.

Sarakiniko - smaller, with pines behind and turquoise water. The least organised of the group.

Slightly further out, the Ali Pasha beaches (10 km north) and Agios Ioannis (5 km) offer more quiet. The Ionian water is generally warmer than the Aegean and has better visibility for snorkelling.

Where to stay

Parga centre - apartments in the old core, near the harbour and restaurants. No parking at the door, but everything walkable. Picked for atmosphere over driving convenience.

Krioneri waterfront - hotels and apartments with direct access to the town beach. Optimal location for both centre and beach on foot.

Valtos - mostly apartments and smaller hotels above the large beach. You need a car for the centre, but the beach is right below. Picked for those who want the bigger beach with access.

Lihnos - mostly resort hotels, quieter, with half-board and animation for children. Picked for families who do not want to go into the centre often.

Getting there

From Belgrade Parga is about 1,000 km - 10 to 12 hours with breaks. Border crossings: Preševo–Đevđelija (North Macedonia) and Evzoni–Polikastro (Greece). After Thessaloniki you head west on the A2 / Egnatia Odos to Ioannina, then a local road to the coast - 60 km from Ioannina to Parga. Most Balkan travellers drive in groups of three or four.

By air - the nearest airport is Preveza (PVK), 60 km south. From Belgrade there are seasonal flights (June–September), around 1 hour 30 minutes. Without a direct flight - via Athens or Thessaloniki with an internal connection.

Direct bus from Belgrade to Parga - seasonal services from several operators, 12 to 14 hours. Return fare 70 to 100 €. Popular among travellers who want a switch-off journey.

Best time to visit

May - cool, sea 18–20 °C (for the brave), land 22–25 °C. Parga is not yet full, restaurants just opening for the season. Ideal for couples.

June - transition to full summer. Sea 21–23 °C, land 26–29 °C. The first family groups arrive.

July and August - peak. Sea 23–25 °C, land 29–33 °C. The Parga centre is dense, beaches full of Balkan, Italian and German families. Book months ahead.

September - many people's best month. Sea still warm at 23–24 °C, land settling to 26–28 °C, 30 percent fewer tourists, prices drop.

October - first half still summer mode on the coast; second half slides into off-season. Many tavernas close.

Things to see and do

The Venetian fortress - on the hill above town, with views to the Ionian and Paxos in the distance. A 15-minute walk uphill, entry 2 to 3 €. Best at sunset.

Boat to Paxos and Antipaxos - full-day boat trip (35 to 50 € per person with lunch). Paxos has the pretty villages of Gaios and Lakka; Antipaxos has some of the Ionian's most stunning beaches - Voutoumi and Vrika.

Acheron river and gorge - south of Parga, the mythological river of Greek antiquity (the crossing of souls to the underworld). Swimming in cold river water (15 °C even in summer), kayaking, walking along the gorge.

Monastery of the Virgin of Vlacherna - a historic church by the Acheron, small but atmospheric. A day trip with a restaurant stop inland (local lamb).

Vikos Gorge and Zagori villages - 90 km inland, by some measures the deepest gorge in Europe. A full day of driving, but one of the finest natural sights in Greece.

Pricing - what to expect

Accommodation: a four-person apartment is 50 to 110 € per night in shoulder, 75 to 160 € at peak. Three or four-star hotels with breakfast 70 to 120 € per person. Villas inland 100 to 200 € per night.

Weekly cost per person with a car (fuel + tolls + supplies): 320 to 500 € shoulder, 480 to 720 € peak.
