Thassos - Holiday Guide: Beaches, Olive Groves and Proximity to Serbia
Thassos is the closest Greek island to Serbia - ideal for a short break. Golden sand and a short ferry crossing.

Thassos is the northernmost Greek island, lying just off the coast of Kavala in northern Greece - and therefore the closest Greek island to Serbia (around 650 km from Belgrade to the ferry port at Keramoti). It's lush green, covered in pine forests and olive groves, with golden sandy beaches, a small mountain range and a charming ancient town. Thassos is the perfect island for those who don't want a long journey: drive to Kavala, take the 35-minute ferry and you're there.
Why Thassos?
- Closest Greek island to Serbia - 35-minute ferry from Keramoti or Kavala; ideal for a week or weekend break
- Green and fresh - Unlike the arid Cyclades, Thassos is a true green island with pine forests, olive groves and waterfalls
- Golden sandy beaches - Golden Beach, Makryammos, Skala Potamias - some of the best sand in northern Greece
- Ancient history - Ancient Thassos (near Limenas Town) has a remarkably well-preserved agora, ancient theatre and temples
- Family-friendly - Shallow, calm water on most beaches; very safe for children
Best Beaches
Golden Beach (Hrisi Ammoudia) - the island's flagship beach. 3 km of fine golden sand along a bay near Skala Potamias. Shallow water, well organised with sun loungers and tavernas. The most popular beach on the island.
Paradise Beach (Paradeisos) - smaller, more intimate cove south of Golden Beach. Clear water, pine trees down to the shore, relaxed atmosphere.
Marble Beach (Saliara) - a unique small beach made of white marble pebbles. Access by boat or a short hike. Striking contrast between the white stones and the vivid blue water.
Makryammos - a resort beach just east of Limenas, with fine sand and resort hotel facilities.
Limenas - Capital of Thassos
Limenas (also called Thassos Town) is the island's main port and capital. The ancient agora, the ancient theatre (used in summer for performances), the museum and the ruins of the ancient walls are all walkable from the harbour. The harbour itself is lively with seafood restaurants, cafés and a beautiful waterfront promenade.
Inland Thassos
Don't miss the mountain villages: Theologos (former Byzantine capital, beautifully preserved), Kazaviti (traditional stone houses, the greenest village on the island) and Panagia (fountain in the square, plane trees and cool temperatures).
