A stone village on the slopes of Pelion above turquoise water, Thessaly - 2026 holidays

Pelion does not look like the Greece you are expecting. Instead of bare rock and white cubes, here a mountain covered in chestnut, beech and olive groves drops straight into the sea, with stone villages under slate roofs in between and coves reached by switchbacks through forest. In myth this is the land of the centaurs - Chiron taught Achilles here, and it was from ancient Iolcos, today's Volos, that Jason and the Argonauts sailed for the Golden Fleece. This guide covers which of the two coasts to choose, which beaches and villages are worth it, how to get there and what a 2026 holiday costs.

Where Pelion is and why it differs

Pelion is a peninsula in Thessaly, hooking south-east from Volos. On one side lies the enclosed Pagasetic Gulf, on the other the open Aegean. That single mountain ridge separates two entirely different holidays.

  • Greenery Greece rarely has - chestnut and beech forest, apples and springs at 1,500 metres, an hour from the beach.
  • Protected stone architecture - Makrinitsa, Portaria, Vyzitsa, Tsagarada, Milies, Zagora.
  • Two climates in one day - morning mist among the chestnuts, afternoon on a white pebble beach.
  • Little mass tourism - Pelion is where Greeks themselves go, especially from Athens and Thessaloniki.
  • The gateway to the Sporades - ferries from Volos serve Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos.

The best beaches

East, Aegean side

  • Mylopotamos - the signature Pelion beach: two coves joined by a natural tunnel through the rock.
  • Fakistra - a small wild cove reached by a forest path, regularly listed among the finest in Greece.
  • Papa Nero - a long fine-shingle beach beside Agios Ioannis, with tavernas and facilities.
  • Damouchari - a stone cove with the remains of a Venetian fort and a miniature harbour, used as a location for Mamma Mia!
  • Potistika and Paltsi - wide, empty beaches in the south-east, with dunes and waves.
  • Horefto - a long sandy beach below Zagora, a rare mix of sand and open sea.

West, gulf side

  • Afissos - the prettiest village on the gulf, tumbling down to the water with small beaches and waterfront tavernas. Where to stay →
  • Kala Nera - the most developed resort on this coast, with a long beach and promenade. Where to stay →
  • Kato Gatzea and Platanidia - pines, campsites and calm water close to Volos.
  • Milina and Horto - fishing villages at the southern end, with the warmest sea in the region.

The villages

  • Makrinitsa - the "balcony of Pelion", a protected village looking over the whole gulf; cobbles, fountains and mansions turned into guesthouses.
  • Portaria - plane trees and springs, the trailhead for mountain walks.
  • Milies - terminus of the Pelion railway, with a grand square and a 19th-century library. Where to stay →
  • Vyzitsa - the best preserved ensemble of painted stone mansions.
  • Tsagarada - a village inside a chestnut forest, with a plane tree over a thousand years old on its square. Where to stay →
  • Zagora - the largest village, known for its apples and its historic school.

The Pelion railway

The narrow-gauge line from Ano Lechonia to Milies opened in the late 19th century and was engineered by Evaristo de Chirico, father of the painter Giorgio de Chirico. It crosses stone viaducts above ravines, takes about ninety minutes each way and runs at weekends and holidays in season. For children it is the highlight of the trip.

Volos - the city of tsipouradika

Volos sits at the head of the gulf and is the gateway to the region: a long waterfront promenade, an archaeological museum with neolithic finds, and mythology everywhere - the Argo sailed from here.

The reason to linger is culinary: the tsipouradiko. Order a small bottle of tsipouro and a new meze arrives with it, free of charge, round after round, until you stop. Alongside comes spetzofai, the local sausage and pepper stew. The ritual lasts hours and is the best introduction to local life there is.

Day trips

  • The Sporades by ferry - from Volos to Skiathos (about 1.5 h by fast craft), Skopelos and Alonissos. Skopelos is where most of Mamma Mia! was filmed, including the clifftop chapel.
  • Meteora (about 160 km) - the monasteries on their rock pillars, a UNESCO site and one of the great sights of Europe; feasible as a long day trip.
  • Walking the kalderimia - the old cobbled mule paths between villages, now waymarked routes through chestnut woods.
  • Wineries and distilleries inland from Volos, with tsipouro tastings.
  • Agriolefkes ski centre - the winter side of Pelion at 1,500 m, with a sea view.

When to go and what it costs

The season runs from late May to early October. June and September are particularly good here: the mountain stays cool when the coast hits 35 °C, and unlike the islands the greenery never burns off.

FAQ

Which coast of Pelion should I choose?

The west (Pagasetic Gulf) if you travel with small children or do not want to drive: calm, shallow, warm water and resorts on a flat road. The east (Aegean) if you want spectacular beaches and clear water and do not mind a switchback to every cove.

Do I need a car?

Effectively yes. Bus services are sparse and the best of the region is scattered across the mountain. Without a car you realistically see only the village you stay in.

Where was Mamma Mia filmed?

Mostly on the island of Skopelos, with some scenes on Pelion at the cove of Damouchari. Skopelos is two to three hours by ferry from Volos, so the two combine well.

Is Pelion good for children?

The west coast is: shallow calm beaches and everything within walking distance in Kala Nera or Afissos. The Pelion railway is one of the best family attractions in Greece. The east coast is harder work because of the roads and the surf.

When is the best time to visit?

June and September. Warm sea, comfortable mountain temperatures and few crowds. July and August are hotter and pricier, though the forests keep Pelion cooler than the islands.

What is a tsipouradiko?

A Volos institution: order a small bottle of tsipouro and a new meze arrives with every round, at no extra cost. The cheapest and most entertaining meal in the region.

Pelion answers the question of what to do when the sea alone is not enough and the mountains are too far - here they are the same place. Browse the Volos and Magnesia region and Pelion, or compare with the Olympic Riviera, on the same road but 200 km closer.
