About Volos / Magnesia

Why Volos / Magnesia?

Magnesia is a region in central Greece with the port of Volos as the main town, the Pelion peninsula (mountain area with traditional villages and beaches) and access to the Sporadic islands (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos). A Volos holiday in 2026 is for travellers who want authentic Greece off the main tourist routes - with a combination of mountain and sea.

The character is untouched by tourism. Volos is a port city (~140,000 residents), the launch point for the Sporades and Pelion. Pelion is probably Greece's most beautiful mountain peninsula - pine and chestnut forests descend to sandy beaches, with traditional stone villages at altitude. It differs from more popular coastal regions in lacking dense tourist infrastructure.

Position: 320 km northwest of Athens, 220 km south of Thessaloniki.

Beaches and the sea

The Pelion peninsula has a double coastline:

West coast (Pagasetic gulf) - calm pebble and sandy beaches:

  • Afissos - sandy beach with pines
  • Horto - smaller village with small beaches
  • Milina - family-oriented

East coast (Aegean) - more dramatic beaches, stronger waves:

  • Mylopotamos - two sandy bays separated by a natural arch
  • Damouchari - the Mamma Mia film village
  • Agios Ioannis - a longer sandy beach

The water is turquoise and clean, with excellent visibility. Blue Flag on sections.

Where to stay

Volos town - urban hotels with access to the Sporades ferry. Less touristy.

Pelion villages (Makrinitsa, Vizitsa, Tsagarada) - traditional stone houses, boutique stays, quiet.

Pelion coast (Afissos, Mylopotamos) - family apartments by the beach.

Skiathos/Skopelos/Alonissos - if you want an island stay, Volos is the ferry base.
