About Skopelos
Why Skopelos?
Skopelos is the second-largest Sporadic island, world-famous as the filming location for "Mamma Mia!" (2008). A dense pine forest covers 80 percent of the island, with villages climbing the hills and beaches tucked into bays. A Skopelos holiday in 2026 is for travellers who want a green Greek island without the crowds.
The character is quiet and nature-oriented. Skopelos has around 4,700 permanent residents, with the main town of Skopelos on the northeast coast. It differs from larger Aegean islands in its dense vegetation and lower tourist infrastructure.
Position: 30 km east of mainland Magnesia (Volos is the main ferry terminal), 250 km northwest of Athens.
Beaches and the sea
Skopelos beaches are mostly pebble (white pebbles), with a few sandy ones.
Kastani beach - the Mamma Mia beach from the films, sandy with wooden jetties.
Velanio beach - the most famous "nude" beach, pebble, quiet.
Stafylos beach - sandy, family-friendly, one of the few sandy beaches on the island.
Limnonari beach - a long pebble beach with crystal water.
Hovolo beach - sandy, isolated, accessible after a short walk.
The Aegean water is clean and turquoise. Excellent snorkelling visibility.
