Sandy beach with umbrellas and pines by turquoise water on Kassandra, the first leg of Halkidiki - 2026 holiday

Kassandra is the busiest and best-known of Halkidiki's three legs. The first ("western") finger is closest to Thessaloniki, the most developed and the most amenity-rich - long sandy beaches, pines by the sea, promenades full of tavernas and cafés, and the liveliest nightlife on the peninsula. This is home to Chaniotis, Pefkochori, Kallithea, Afytos, Polychrono and Sani. This guide walks you through every town, the best beaches and everything you need before your 2026 holiday.

Where Kassandra is and what makes it different

Kassandra is Halkidiki's first (western) leg, closest to Thessaloniki and the easiest to reach; a canal at Nea Potidea separates it from the mainland. Unlike wild Sithonia and calm Athos, Kassandra is the most touristic: the most hotels and apartments, organised beaches with sunbeds, mini-markets, restaurants and nightlife until dawn. That is why it has been the top choice for families and younger travellers for decades.

  • Closest and most accessible - the shortest transfer from Thessaloniki airport.
  • The most amenities - hotels, apartments, tavernas, water parks, boat trips.
  • The best nightlife in Halkidiki - Kallithea, Chaniotis and Pefkochori are the hubs.
  • Long sandy beaches - ideal for families with children.

Where to stay in Kassandra

Chaniotis (Chaniotis) - the big hit

One of the most popular resorts in all of Halkidiki. A long sandy beach, a lively promenade full of tavernas, pastry shops and stores, and a pleasant evening buzz. A great mix for families and younger travellers - and the widest choice of accommodation.

Pefkochori - pines and sea

The name comes from "pefko" (pine): a long beach ringed by pine forest and a lively centre with a marina where boat trips depart. Very popular, it blends beach, amenities and nightlife. The southernmost larger town on Kassandra's east coast.

Kallithea - the party capital

Kassandra's biggest tourist centre and the nightlife hub of Halkidiki: clubs, beach bars and restaurants. Sandy beaches, close to Thessaloniki, beside the ancient Sanctuary of Ammon Zeus. For those who want the sea by day and a party by night.

Afytos - the prettiest village

A traditional stone village on a cliff above the sea, one of the most scenic in Halkidiki. Cobbled lanes, galleries, tavernas with views over the gulf and Sithonia in the distance. Quieter and more "authentic", with beaches below the village.

Polychrono and Kriopigi - family and relaxed

Polychrono has a long sandy beach and affordable accommodation - a favourite with families and for longer stays. Kriopigi sits on a hill, quieter, with lovely views and decent beaches below.

Nea Fokea, Nea Potidea and Sani

Nea Fokea is a small fishing village with a Byzantine tower and St. Paul's cave, right at the entrance to Kassandra. Nea Potidea sits by the canal, family-friendly and great for sunsets. Sani is the upscale part (Sani Resort, marina, festival) with one of the finest stretches of beach.

West coast: Siviri, Fourka, Possidi

The quieter side of the peninsula: Siviri (summer amphitheatre and festival), Fourka (beach bars, a younger crowd) and the famous Possidi cape with its sandy spit and lighthouse - one of Kassandra's most beautiful beaches.
