Parga, Syvota & the Ionian Coast of Epirus - 2026 Holiday Guide: Turquoise Coves, the Acheron and Greece's 'Caribbean'

The Ionian coast of Epirus is mainland Greece's fastest-rising destination: postcard-pretty Parga beneath its Venetian castle, Syvota's Caribbean-style lagoons, the kilometres-long Vrachos-Loutsa beach and the mythical river Acheron. A guide to the towns, beaches, boat trips to Paxos and Antipaxos, driving routes, accommodation and 2026 prices.

Panorama of Parga with its Venetian castle, colourful houses and turquoise Ionian Sea, Epirus, Greece

While Halkidiki and the Olympic Riviera have long been the classics, the past few seasons belong to the Ionian coast of Epirus - and for good reason. Parga looks like a Venetian postcard, Syvota is nicknamed the "Greek Caribbean" for its turquoise lagoons, the Vrachos-Loutsa beach runs for kilometres, and the mythical river Acheron flows just inland. The Ionian Sea here is pool-clear, olive groves reach the waterline, and prices remain friendlier than on the famous Ionian islands. In 2026 Parga ranks alongside Halkidiki, Thassos and Lefkada among the most-booked Greek destinations for Balkan travellers. Here's everything you need to know.

Where Epirus is - and what makes it different

Epirus is Greece's north-western corner, facing the Ionian Sea opposite Corfu and Paxos. The coast from Syvota (near Igoumenitsa) through Parga down to Preveza strings together turquoise coves, olive groves and fishing villages that only became stars in the last decade.

  • The clearest sea - the Ionian is famous for its transparency and colour; beaches here regularly make "best of Greece" lists.
  • Green as Tuscany - olives, cypresses and pines down to the shore; Epirus is Greece's greenest region.
  • No ferry needed - unlike Corfu or Paxos, you drive right to your door.
  • Authentic and picturesque - Parga and Syvota are Mediterranean small towns with marinas, not concrete resorts.
  • A base for the Ionian islands - day cruises to Paxos, Antipaxos, Corfu and Lefkada.
💡 Considering the Ionian islands too? See our Lefkada guide and Corfu guide - Epirus is the only way to get Ionian water with no ferry and no flight.

Where to stay on the Ionian coast of Epirus

Parga - the Venetian postcard

Stacked amphitheatre-style beneath a Venetian castle, with colourful houses, narrow lanes and the islet of Panagia in the middle of the bay, Parga is one of the most photogenic towns in all of Greece. Its beaches - Krioneri (in town), Valtos (the big one behind the castle) and Lichnos (a pine-fringed cove) - cover every taste. Evenings buzz along the marina promenade. It's the region's most in-demand base - book July as early as you can.

Syvota - the "Greek Caribbean"

An indented bay dotted with islets, a marina and lagoons the colour of the Caribbean. A sand spit leads to Bella Vraka beach on Mourtos islet (you wade through the shallows to your own "private island"), while the Pisina ("swimming pool") cove is reached by boat. The signature activity: renting a licence-free boat (up to 30 hp) and touring the coves yourself. Mega Ammos, Mikri Ammos and Zavia beaches are a 10–20 minute walk from the centre.

Vrachos and Loutsa - the endless beach

Vrachos sits on one of the longest sandy beaches of the Ionian coast - merged with Loutsa it stretches over 4 km, lined with tavernas and beach bars yet never truly full. Popular for the combination of big beach, fair prices and Parga only 20 minutes away.

Ammoudia - the mouth of the mythical Acheron

A small fishing village where the river Acheron - mythology's gateway to the underworld - meets the sea. Today: a calm sandy beach, refreshingly cool river water mixing with the Ionian, and lagoon-side tavernas. The base for trips to the Acheron springs and the Necromanteion.

Kanali, Kastrosykia and Mytikas - the Preveza riviera

The southern stretch towards Preveza: a string of quiet, family resorts on long sand-and-pebble beaches with Lefkada on the horizon. Kanali and Kastrosykia are ideal for a crowd-free holiday, while Preveza - a lively port town with a Venetian clock tower and alley tavernas - covers your evenings out. Nearby is Monolithi, one of the longest sandy beaches in Greece (~22 km).

The best beaches of the Epirus coast

  • Valtos (Parga) - the big pebble-and-sand sweep behind the castle.
  • Krioneri (Parga) - the town beach opposite Panagia islet; swim out to the cross!
  • Lichnos (Parga) - a pine-fringed cove 4 km from town, one of the region's finest.
  • Bella Vraka (Syvota) - the sand spit to Mourtos islet; pure Caribbean scenery.
  • Pisina (Syvota) - the "natural pool", reached by boat.
  • Mega Ammos and Zavia (Syvota) - turquoise water and olive groves, walkable from town.
  • Vrachos-Loutsa - 4+ km of sand with room for everyone.

Day trips - from the underworld to the Caribbean

  • Paxos & Antipaxos cruise - a full-day boat from Parga or Syvota: the Blue Caves, Gaios town and Antipaxos's turquoise beaches. The region's number-one excursion.
  • Acheron springs (Glyki) - wade up an ice-cold emerald river through a gorge; kayaking and horse riding for the adventurous. Kids love it.
  • The Necromanteion - the ancient "oracle of the dead" above the Acheron; mythology made real.
  • Corfu - a day trip by ferry from Igoumenitsa (30–45 min).
  • Lefkada - connected by bridge: Porto Katsiki and Egremni in a day.
  • Ali Pasha's castle (Anthousa) - Parga from above; go for sunset.
  • Zalongo and Nikopolis - the monument and the ancient city near Preveza.

FAQ

How long is the drive from Belgrade to Parga?

About 850–900 km - realistically 8.5–9.5 hours with breaks, almost entirely on motorway (E75 + Egnatia). Many travellers overnight in Thessaloniki or drive through the night.

Parga or Syvota - which should I pick?

Parga for buzz, promenade, restaurants and the postcard look; Syvota for turquoise lagoons, boats and a slower rhythm. They're 45 minutes apart - many base in one and day-trip to the other.

Is the Ionian Sea colder than the Aegean?

Only slightly - summer water is still 24–26 °C. In exchange you get unmatched clarity and colour, and fewer waves than on the open Aegean.

Do I need a ferry to reach Parga or Syvota?

No - this is the mainland coast: you drive to your accommodation's door. Ferries are only for day trips to Corfu or Paxos.

Is Epirus good for families with kids?

Yes, with one note: pick sandy beaches with a gradual entry (Vrachos-Loutsa, Monolithi, Valtos, Ammoudia). The Acheron springs are a favourite kids' adventure. More in Greece with kids.

The Ionian coast of Epirus is the Greece you've seen on island postcards - without the ferry and at friendlier prices. Browse the full Epirus accommodation selection and book early: Parga fills up for July and August by spring.
