About Paralia
Why Paralia?
Paralia (Paralia Katerini) is probably the most popular Greek resort for Balkan travellers - a densely developed town on the Olympic Riviera (Pieria, 80 km south of Thessaloniki), with a pedestrian zone, sandy beach and an atmosphere that has been a favourite of Balkan families for decades. A Paralia holiday in 2026 is a traditional choice with all the amenities - restaurants, shops, cafés, bars - within walking distance.
The character is lively but not aggressive. Paralia has around 3,500 permanent residents and multiplies 10 to 15 times in summer. The centre is walkable, with a pedestrian zone nearly 2 km long along the seafront. Every other restaurant has a Serbian menu, supermarkets accept Serbian cards, Serbian is heard more often than Greek during July and August.
It differs from quiet Halkidiki and Pieria destinations in significantly higher tourist density, but also in the choice of restaurants, speed of service and logistical ease. Position: 80 km from Thessaloniki, 20 km from Olympus, 60 km from Vergina.
Beaches and the sea
The main Paralia beach is sandy, almost 2 km long, with wooden jetties and the classic "sun bed with parasol" layout. The water is calm with shallow entry, quality is good (though not at Halkidiki levels due to the proximity of the Thessaloniki port). Blue Flag on sections.

Where to stay
Paralia centre along the pedestrian zone - hotels and apartments in 3 to 5-storey buildings. Walking distance to everything, but with night noise (bars until 2 or 3 a.m.).
Northern and southern ends of the pedestrian zone - quieter, less centre pressure.
Olympic Beach (5 km north) - an alternative for "Paralia but quieter".

Getting there
Paralia is 80 km from Thessaloniki:

Belgrade–Thessaloniki flight (1 hour 15 minutes), then an 80-minute transfer by car on the A1 motorway toward Athens, exit for Paralia.

By car from Belgrade - 670 km, 7 to 9 hours. Standard route to Thessaloniki, then A1 south.

Direct bus from Belgrade - the most popular option for Paralia, many operators (Lasta, Niš-Ekspres, others), 10 to 12 hours. Return fare 60 to 100 €.
Best time to visit
May–June - cool, sea 18–21 °C, land 23–28 °C. Paralia starts the season, half the tavernas open.
July–August - peak. Sea 23–25 °C, land 29–33 °C. The pedestrian zone is busy, Serbian dominates. Book months ahead.
September - excellent for those who want "Paralia without the crowds". Prices drop 25 to 30 percent.
October - first half warm, restaurants begin to close.

Olympus National Park - 30 minutes by car, hiking tours, Greece's highest mountain.
Ancient Dion - 30 minutes by car, an archaeological complex at the foot of Olympus.

Pricing - what to expect
Accommodation: a four-person apartment is 45 to 100 € per night in shoulder, 70 to 150 € at peak. Three or four-star hotels 75 to 130 € per person.
Weekly cost per person: 320 to 520 € shoulder, 480 to 740 € peak.
Restaurant prices: main course 8 to 14 €, gyros 4 to 7 €, salad 4 to 6 €, glass of wine 3 to 5 €. Paralia has many restaurants with Serbian menus and Serbian beers.
Sun beds with parasol: 8 to 14 € for a pair.
Frequently asked questions
Is Paralia really that "Serbian"? Yes, during July and August Serbian is the dominant language in the centre. Many restaurants have Serbian menus, Serbian music in the evening, accept dinars. For some travellers this is an advantage (comfort); for others a downside (lose the Greek atmosphere).
What is the difference between Paralia and Leptokarya? Paralia is denser and more developed, with more restaurants and stronger nightlife. Leptokarya is slightly smaller and quieter. Both have similar beaches and access to Olympus.
Is Paralia suitable for babies? The centre is not (night noise). The northern and southern ends of the beach or Olympic Beach (5 km north) are better choices.
Is renting a car worth it? For staying only in Paralia - not essential. For Olympus, Dion and Vergina - absolutely.
