Why Leptokarya?
Leptokarya is a popular resort on the Olympic Riviera in Pieria, 80 km south of Thessaloniki, with the backdrop of Mount Olympus (2,918 m, Greece's highest mountain). A traditional favourite of Balkan families for decades, with a long sandy beach, developed tourist infrastructure and day trips to Olympus. A Leptokarya holiday in 2026 combines beach with one of Greece's most striking natural sites in the background.
The character is lively and family-oriented. Leptokarya has around 4,000 permanent residents and triples in summer. The centre is walkable, with restaurants, cafés, supermarkets and markets. It differs from quiet Halkidiki villages in higher tourist density, though it does not reach Hanioti or Pefkohori levels.
The position is excellent for travellers who want beach plus nature: Olympus National Park 30 minutes by car, Thessaloniki 80 minutes, ancient Dion 15 minutes.
Beaches and the sea
The main Leptokarya beach is sandy, about 4 km long, with sand dunes and tamarisks. The water is calm with shallow entry, and quality is good (Blue Flag on the central section). The northern sections are organised; the southern parts toward Plaka stay freer.

- Paralia Katerini (20 km north) - a large sandy beach with developed infrastructure
- Nei Pori (8 km south) - a smaller resort with a sandy beach
The water in the Thermaic gulf is clean and calm. The shallow entry makes Leptokarya exceptionally suited to families with children.

Beach edge - hotels with direct beach access.

Getting there
Leptokarya is 80 km from Thessaloniki:

Belgrade–Thessaloniki flight (1 hour 15 minutes), then a 75-minute transfer by car on the A1 motorway toward Athens.

By car from Belgrade - 670 km, 7 to 9 hours. Standard route to Thessaloniki, then A1 south, exit for Leptokarya.

Direct bus from Belgrade - seasonal services from several operators, 10 to 12 hours. A very popular choice for Balkan families.
Best time to visit
May–June - cool, sea 18–21 °C, land 22–28 °C. Olympus is at its prettiest in May (snowy peak + green slopes).
July–August - peak, sea 23–25 °C, land 29–33 °C. The centre is busy.
September - excellent, sea 23 °C, fewer crowds, prices drop.

Olympus National Park - hiking tours from Litohoro (10 km), from easy two-hour walks to multi-day routes with mountain hut stays. The highest peak Mytikas is 2,918 m.
Ancient Dion (15 km north) - an archaeological complex with temples and baths. A well-preserved site at the foot of Olympus.
Saint Dionysios Monastery - at the foot of Olympus, a Byzantine monastery with fine frescoes.
Vergina (60 km northwest) - UNESCO site, the tombs of Macedonian kings.
Thessaloniki day trip - 80 km, culture.
Litohoro town - a traditional town at the foot of Olympus, with stone houses and tavernas.
Pricing - what to expect
Accommodation: a four-person apartment is 40 to 90 € per night in shoulder, 60 to 130 € at peak. Three or four-star hotels 65 to 110 € per person.
Weekly cost per person: 290 to 460 € shoulder, 440 to 660 € peak.
Restaurant prices: main course 7 to 13 €, fish 12 to 20 €, glass of wine 3 to 5 €. Leptokarya has many restaurants with Serbian menus.

Is Olympus accessible for a day trip? Yes, up to the natural park at 1,000 m. Climbing to the summit (Mytikas, 2,918 m) requires 2 days with an overnight stay.
What is the difference between Leptokarya and Paralia? Paralia (Paralia Katerini, 20 km north) is a larger tourist centre with more developed infrastructure and bigger hotels. Leptokarya is slightly smaller and quieter, focused on family apartments.
Is the Olympic Riviera suitable for babies? Yes, shallow water entry, calm beaches, accessible amenities.
Is renting a car worth it? Absolutely. Olympus, Dion, Vergina, Thessaloniki - all reachable by car. Without a car the beach is enough but you miss the wider experience.
