About Ligia

Why Ligia?

Ligia is a fishing village on the eastern coast of Lefkada, about 5 km south of the island's main town. A quiet place with a harbour, sandy-pebble beaches and one of the most authentic locations on the island - without large hotel complexes, with local fishermen selling their catch at the morning market. A Ligia holiday in 2026 is for travellers who want Lefkada (an island without a ferry) without dense tourism.

The character is quiet and traditional. Ligia has around 800 residents, a small harbour with fishing boats, two main waterfront tavernas and a few apartments above the coast. It differs from Lefkada's popular centres (Nidri, Vasiliki) in lacking nightlife and organised beach infrastructure.

The position is strategic on the island: 10 minutes from the centre of Lefkada town, 25 minutes from the most famous beaches on the western coast (Porto Katsiki, Egremni).

Beaches and the sea

The Ligia beach is a mix of sand and larger pebbles, about 1 km long. The water is crystal clear and calm because the east of the island is sheltered from waves. The beach has a few tavernas and no dense rows of sun beds.

Beaches nearby:

  • Nikiana (3 km south) - similar, smaller, with a waterfront café
  • Nidri bay (15 km south) - more touristically developed, with a marina and boat trips
  • Porto Katsiki and Egremni (west coast, 25 km) - Lefkada's most famous beaches with white cliffs

The water on Lefkada's east coast is turquoise and calm. Blue Flag at several beaches. Best snorkelling visibility in the morning.

Where to stay

Ligia centre along the harbour - family apartments and small guesthouses. Walking distance to tavernas.

Hills above the village - villas with views of the bay, a car is essential.

Nikiana (3 km south) - similar but with slightly more facilities.

Getting there

Lefkada is an island without a ferry - connected to the mainland by a floating bridge at Aktion:

  1. Fly to Preveza (PVK), 25 km north of the bridge. From Belgrade seasonal flights (1 hour 30 minutes). Airport–Ligia transfer 40 minutes.

  2. By car from Belgrade - 1,050 km, 11 to 13 hours. After Ioannina descend toward Actium, cross the bridge to Lefkada, then 15 km south to Ligia.

  3. Bus from Belgrade to Parga with onward transfers.

Best time to visit

May–June - cool, sea 19–22 °C, land 23–28 °C. Lefkada is at its prettiest in spring with maquis flowers.

July–August - peak, sea 23–25 °C, land 28–32 °C.

September - excellent, sea 23 °C, fewer crowds.

Things to see and do

Porto Katsiki - Lefkada's most famous beach, with white cliffs and turquoise water. 25 minutes by car from Ligia.

Nidri bay excursions - a full-day boat trip around Skorpios (the private Onassis island), Meganisi, Madouri. 30 to 50 € per person.

Lefkada old town - Venetian fort, traditional wooden houses (unique in Greece - wooden top floors as earthquake-proofing), restaurants.

Dimosari waterfall near Nidri - a 30-minute walk to a waterfall in a gorge.

Vasiliki - southern Lefkada, famous for windsurfing. A day trip by car.

Pricing - what to expect

Accommodation: a four-person apartment is 45 to 95 € per night in shoulder, 65 to 135 € at peak. Villas 110 to 200 €. Three-star hotels 65 to 95 € per person.

Weekly cost per person: 320 to 500 € shoulder, 480 to 700 € peak. Lefkada is generally more expensive than mainland Epirus.

Restaurant prices: main course 8 to 14 €, fresh fish 14 to 22 €, glass of wine 3 to 5 €. Ligia has remarkably affordable tavernas for Lefkada levels.

Can I walk to the west coast beaches? No - Porto Katsiki is 25 km by car across the island. A car is essential for the west coast.
