Why Sithonia?
Sithonia is the middle finger of Halkidiki - the greenest, the least developed and, for many travellers, the most beautiful part of the peninsula. Pine forest runs straight into small bays, fishing villages open onto sandy beaches, a mountain road links dozens of curving coves. A Sithonia holiday in 2026 is the natural choice for travellers who want Halkidiki convenience (short drive from the Balkans, road access, proximity to Thessaloniki) without the density of Kassandra.
The character of the destination is family and laid-back. Sithonia has no classic tourist hubs with nightclubs - it has around fifteen small coastal villages, each with its own beach, taverna and, above all, pines. The largest is Sarti on the east, with the longest organised sandy beach on the peninsula. Vourvourou in the north is known for its small bays and offshore islets (excellent snorkelling). Toroni in the south is quieter, with sand dunes and a fishing-village feel.
It differs from Kassandra in lacking the densely built hotel complexes - here it is more about family-run apartments, villas with pools, and eco-camping for real isolation. It differs from Mount Athos in being fully accessible to all travellers, while Athos is a closed monastic republic.
Beaches and the sea
Sithonia has more than 30 named beaches across the 130 km of peninsula coastline. The most famous: Karidi (tourists call it "Karibi" for its turquoise water and finely ground sand) near Vourvourou - phenomenal for photographs, a small bay that fills up fast.
Sarti - the longest organised beach on the east side, 4 km of fine sand with pines in the front row. Sun beds, water sports, tavernas at the waterline. View across to Mount Athos, especially striking at dusk.
Toroni - sandy beaches on the southwest side, calm, with shallow entry. The bottom is so shallow you wade out 50 metres at waist depth - families with children love it.
Kalogria (Nine Bridges) - a small bay with wooden bridges connecting tiny offshore islets. More of an attraction than a beach, but a striking sight.
Tristinika - a long sandy beach in the south, less organised, good for those who want more quiet. Pines down to the sand, water flat.
Blue Flag designations are standard on most organised beaches. Water is generally calm on the western side (sheltered from the wind), more active on the east facing Mount Athos.
Where to stay
Sarti and the surrounding beaches (east side) - the largest choice of hotels, apartments and tavernas. Sarti is walkable, with supermarkets, restaurants and bars. Pick it for the combination of beach access and something to do in the evening.
Vourvourou (north) - smaller, focused on villas and private apartments. More driving to reach beaches and restaurants. Pick it for quiet with access to many small bays.
Toroni and Porto Carras (south–southwest) - Porto Carras is a large hotel resort complex (the only Kassandra-style development on Sithonia), Toroni is smaller with apartments. The southern Sithonia beaches are among the prettiest.
Nikiti (northwest, at the base of the peninsula) - more of a small town than a village, with a market and library, quick access from Thessaloniki. Picked by those who want a "combination" - Sithonia with easy mainland access.
Mountain villages inland (Sykia, Partheni) - small, stone-built, with family apartments and tavernas. You drive to the beach, but if you want authentic atmosphere and lower prices, this is the place.

Getting there
Sithonia is part of Halkidiki, with access via Thessaloniki (SKG) and the mainland road:

Fly from Belgrade to Thessaloniki (1 hour 15 minutes). From Thessaloniki it is 90 minutes to the entry of Sithonia (Nikiti), 2.5 hours to Sarti. Transfer is arranged or via car rental.

Drive from the Balkans - 750 km to Sarti, 8 to 10 hours with breaks. Crossing at Preševo–Đevđelija (North Macedonia) and Evzoni–Polikastro (Greece). From Thessaloniki the A1 motorway to the Halkidiki exit, then the local road through Nikiti and along the coast.

Direct bus from Belgrade to Sarti - seasonal services from several carriers, 10 to 12 hours with breaks. Fare 60 to 90 € return. Convenient for those who do not want to drive.
Driving times within Sithonia: Nikiti to Sarti (east) 60 minutes. Nikiti to Toroni (south) 50 minutes. Vourvourou to Sarti 30 minutes. The peninsula is 70 km long, the full coastal loop about 130 km - a full day of driving to cover.
Best time to visit
May - cool, sea 18–20 °C, land 22–26 °C. The pines smell after spring rain. Prices half of peak, tavernas just opening for the season.
June - transition to full summer. Sea 21–23 °C, land 26–30 °C. Ideal month for travellers who dislike extreme heat.
July and August - peak. Sea 24–26 °C, land 30–34 °C. Beaches full of Balkan, German and Romanian families. Karidi and Sarti at their densest. Vourvourou and Toroni less pressured.
September - best month in many opinions: sea still 23–25 °C, land 26–29 °C, significantly fewer crowds than August. Prices drop by 20 to 25 percent.
October - first half warm and sunny (sea 22 °C, land 23–27 °C), second half slides into off-season. Fewer tavernas open, but the quiet is absolute.
Things to see and do
Boat cruise along Mount Athos from Vourvourou or Ormos Panagia - a half-day cruise along the monastic coast, with stops at small beaches and lunch on board. Boats stay 500 metres from the coast (by law) but the monasteries are clearly visible from the deck.
Karidi beach at dawn - Karidi is so popular by day that quiet is impossible after 11 a.m. Arrive at 7 or 8 in the morning for the real sight and turquoise water without people.
Tagara and Pacha mountain villages - small stone settlements inland of Sithonia, with tavernas on the central squares serving home cooking and local wine. Particularly popular for dinners once the daytime heat eases.
Itamos mountain (811 m) - the highest peak in the centre of the peninsula. Walk from Vourvourou to the summit with views of Mount Athos, about 4 hours round trip. Pine forest and panoramic paths.
Pirgadikia - a small fishing harbour on the north side of the peninsula, with tavernas where fish is served fresh off the boat. Transparent prices, authentic atmosphere.
Mountain biking - Sithonia is popular with cyclists for its forest roads and panoramic trails inland. Rental costs 15 to 25 € per day in Nikiti and Sarti.
Pricing - what to expect
Accommodation: a four-person apartment is 45 to 110 € per night in shoulder, 70 to 170 € in peak. Villas with pools for six 110 to 240 €. Four-star hotels with half-board from 85 € per person.
Weekly cost per person including transfer: 330 to 540 € shoulder, 480 to 780 € peak. Road access makes Sithonia more economical than many islands.
Restaurant prices: main course 8 to 14 €, salad 4 to 6 €, glass of wine 3 to 5 €. Tavernas in smaller villages (Sykia, Partheni) are 20 percent cheaper than in Sarti.
Supermarkets in Nikiti, Sarti, Vourvourou - affordable. Local products (honey, oil, cheeses) from the Nikiti market are cheaper than in beachfront shops.
Sun beds with parasol: 8 to 14 € for a pair in season on organised beaches. Karidi and other popular beaches do not allow you to bring your own shade (local rule for protection).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Sithonia and Kassandra? Sithonia is quieter, greener, with more pines and smaller villages; more villas and family apartments, fewer hotel complexes. Kassandra is densely developed, with large hotels, animation, nightlife and organised tourism. Sithonia equals quiet; Kassandra equals facilities.
Is Karidi (Karibi) beach worth the crowds? Yes, if you arrive before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m. In the middle of the day it is dense, but the turquoise water and finely ground sand are genuinely unique for the Aegean. Worth a one-day visit, not a place for a full peak-season day.
Can I visit Mount Athos from Sithonia? You can visit the Athos coast by boat from Vourvourou or Ormos Panagia (cruises). Setting foot on Athos itself requires a traditional permit (Diamonitirion), is only for men, and travel is from Ouranoupoli. That is a separate type of trip, not a day excursion.
Are family apartments cheaper than hotels? Yes, especially for groups of four or more. Apartments with kitchens let you have breakfast and the occasional lunch in, which saves 15 to 25 percent of the total budget. Hotels suit couples or those who do not want the logistics of self-catering.
Is renting a car worth it? Very much so. Sithonia is 70 km long with different atmospheres at every beach; without a car you are tied to one beach. Rental 25 to 45 € per day - worth it for all days of the week if you plan to explore.
