Sandy beach on the Olympic Riviera with Mount Olympus in the background, Pieria, Greece

The Olympic Riviera (Pieria) is where many Balkan families first meet Greece: the closest Greek coast if you're driving from the north, kilometres of wide sandy beaches, warm shallow Aegean water - and above it all Mount Olympus, home of the ancient gods, rising straight from the sea to 2,918 m. Paralia, Olympic Beach, Nei Pori and Leptokarya have been favourite resorts for generations, and in 2026 the riviera remains one of the most searched-for destinations thanks to the short drive, fair prices and child-friendly beaches. In this guide: which resort to pick, the best beaches, day trips (Olympus, Meteora, Thessaloniki, Dion), driving routes and what things cost.

Where the Olympic Riviera is - and why choose it

The Olympic Riviera is the coastline of the Pieria region, between Thessaloniki and Platamonas, at the foot of Mount Olympus. From Belgrade it's about 610–640 km of motorway - realistically 6 to 6.5 hours with breaks, making it the fastest Greek sea to reach from Serbia and much of the Balkans.

  • Closest - leave early and you're on the beach before noon; doable even as a long weekend off-season.
  • Sandy beaches, shallow sea - kilometre-long beaches with a gradual entry, perfect for kids.
  • Cheaper than Halkidiki - accommodation, tavernas and sunbeds generally cost less.
  • The best day-trip base in Greece's north - Olympus, Meteora, Dion, Platamonas castle and Thessaloniki are all within ~1.5 h.
  • Lively promenades - Paralia and Olympic Beach buzz in the evening; Leptokarya and Nei Pori stay family-calm.
💡 Torn between the riviera and Halkidiki? Compare with our complete Halkidiki guide - the riviera is closer and cheaper, Halkidiki counters with turquoise coves.

Where to stay on the Olympic Riviera

Paralia (Paralia Katerinis) - the heart of the riviera

The riviera's best-known resort. A wide sandy beach, a long promenade of tavernas and bars, a street market, a funfair for kids and an evening scene that never quite stops. Everything starts here: buses to Thessaloniki and Katerini, excursions to Olympus and Meteora. For those who like their holiday with a pulse.

Olympic Beach (Katerini Paralia) - Paralia's calmer neighbour

The same sandy beach continues south of Paralia with a more relaxed, family feel. A 20-minute stroll along the promenade takes you to the centre of Paralia - and back to a quieter base at night. The best compromise: Paralia's beach and amenities without its crowds.

Nei Pori - a long beach with an Olympus view

The southernmost big resort of the riviera. Kilometres of sand, a gradual sea entry and a view that pairs Mount Olympus with the Aegean. The town is compact - everything within a 10-minute walk - with plenty of newer apartments. Platamonas and its medieval castle are right next door.

Leptokarya - an authentic town beneath Olympus

A real Greek town that lives year-round, with a long sand-and-pebble beach and the finest view of Olympus's peaks. Quieter than Paralia, with excellent tavernas and a weekly market. After Litochoro, this is the closest access to the Olympus trails.

Platamonas - the castle above the sea

A resort beneath the famous 13th-century Byzantine castle you can spot from the motorway. Sand and pebble beaches, pine woods and a charming little town with fish tavernas. In summer the castle becomes a festival stage - concerts overlooking the bay.

Litochoro and Plaka Litochorou - the gateway to Olympus

Litochoro is a mountain town at the entrance to Olympus National Park - stone houses, the rushing Enipeas stream and trailheads right in the village. Its beach, Plaka Litochorou, is 5 km away: a rare chance to hike the Enipeas gorge in the morning and swim in the afternoon.

Palios Panteleimonas - the stone village above the coast

On the slopes above Platamonas hides Palios Panteleimonas, a restored stone village of cobbled lanes, plane trees and tavernas overlooking the whole coastline. The riviera's prettiest half-day trip - see our dedicated article on Palios Panteleimonas.

The best beaches of the Olympic Riviera

  • Paralia - a wide town beach with every amenity; part is always free for towels.
  • Olympic Beach - the same sand, fewer people; great for families.
  • Nei Pori - a kilometre-long beach with gradual entry, among the riviera's finest.
  • Plaka Litochorou - pebblier, clearer water and an Olympus backdrop.
  • Skotina and Panteleimonas beach - quieter stretches between Platamonas and Leptokarya.
  • Makrygialos and Methoni (northern riviera) - shallow sandy bays, famous for mussels.
💡 Sunbed, drink and water-sport prices are broken down in Beach prices in Greece 2026 - and under the new law at least 70% of every beach stays free for your towel.

Day trips - the riviera's trump card

  • Mount Olympus & the Enipeas gorge - drive from Litochoro up to Prionia, then hike the gorge; mountaineers continue to the Spilios Agapitos refuge. Even the drive alone is spectacular.
  • Meteora - the monasteries on the rocks (UNESCO), about 1 h 40 min from Paralia. The most popular full-day trip.
  • Dion - the sacred city of the ancient Macedonians at the foot of Olympus; archaeological park and museum, perfect with kids.
  • Platamonas castle - Byzantine ramparts with a view over the whole gulf.
  • Thessaloniki - Greece's second city: the White Tower, Aristotelous square, Byzantine churches; ~1 h away.
  • Vergina - the royal tombs of Philip II (UNESCO), ~1 h away.
