About Halkidiki

Why Halkidiki?

Halkidiki is the three-fingered peninsula of northern Greece - Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos - and it offers one of the easiest entries to a Greek holiday for travellers from the Balkans and central Europe. Pine forests roll down to sandy coves, the road from Thessaloniki airport is short, and the area is large enough that you can move between a busy beach town and a quiet bay in under an hour.

Each finger has its own character. Kassandra is the most developed, with the larger resorts, beach bars and family hotels concentrated around Kallithea, Hanioti and Pefkohori. Sithonia stays quieter - smaller villas and family-run apartments hidden in pine bays, less nightlife, more swimming. Mount Athos is a monastic republic that can only be visited from the sea, but the surrounding waters are some of the calmest in the northern Aegean.

A Halkidiki holiday in 2026 keeps its reputation as the best value option on the mainland - short transfers from the airport, walkable resorts, and accommodation that ranges from polished five-star to family-run studios above a taverna. Compared with the Pieria–Olympus coast further west, the beaches are cleaner and less built up; compared with islands like Crete or Rhodes, the logistics are simpler (no ferry, no internal flights).

Beaches and the sea

The coastline is almost entirely sand or fine pebble, with shallow entry that suits children. Blue Flag designations are awarded to dozens of beaches every season, mostly in Sithonia and northern Kassandra.

On Kassandra the long organised beaches around Polihrono, Kallithea and Hanioti come with sun beds, water sports, and tavernas at the waterline. You can plan a day at the beach knowing lunch is two minutes away.

Sithonia is a different story. The coastline is broken into countless small bays separated by pine-covered headlands. Some bays are organised, others are completely wild - you walk in from a forest path and have the cove to yourself. The water is typically flat and clear, ideal for snorkelling and for children learning to swim.

Mount Athos can only be visited by boat from Ouranoupoli. Half-day cruises take you along the western coast of the peninsula, past the monasteries (women are not permitted to land on Athos itself) with swimming stops in coves that you cannot reach by road.

Where to stay

Halkidiki splits cleanly into two profiles. If you want a gated all-inclusive resort with animation programmes, private beaches and four or five stars, Kassandra is the answer - especially Hanioti, Pefkohori and the Sani area. This is where the larger international hotel groups operate.

If you prefer a villa or apartment with its own kitchen, more space and less programmed entertainment, Sithonia has a deeper inventory of private rentals. Many are run by families who have hosted the same returning guests for ten or fifteen seasons.

Groups of friends who want a mix of swimming and nightlife usually pick Kallithea or Sarti. For complete quiet, the southwestern tip of Sithonia (Toroni, Tristinika) or the northern Kassandra coast (Nea Fokea) is what you want.

Getting there

The peninsula has no airport of its own. You fly into Thessaloniki (SKG), 70 to 100 km from most resorts. From Belgrade Air Serbia and several low-cost carriers operate direct seasonal flights (flight time around 1 hour 15 minutes). Transfers from the airport are usually arranged by your booking, or you pick up a rental car at the terminal.

Buses from Belgrade run through Skopje and the Evzoni–Polikastro border crossing. Realistic journey time is 8 to 10 hours depending on border traffic. From May to October multiple operators offer direct services to Sarti, Vourvourou and Pefkohori.

Driving from the Balkans is straightforward. Belgrade to Kallithea is about 700 km - seven to nine hours with short breaks, including the Preševo–Đevđelija crossing into North Macedonia and the Evzoni crossing into Greece. North Macedonia requires a road vignette; Greek tolls operate on the A1 motorway from Thessaloniki. Most groups of three or four travel by car for the flexibility of exploring all three fingers.

Best time to visit

The season runs May to October. May is cool in the water (sea around 19–20 °C) but dry and sunny on land (24–27 °C), with very few tourists - ideal for couples and walkers.

June warms up: sea 22–24 °C, air 27–30 °C, and the first families start arriving.

July and August are peak. Sea temperatures climb to 24–26 °C, air to 30–34 °C, beaches fill, prices rise. These are the months chosen by families with school-age children.

September is arguably the best overall month. The sea is still warm (23–25 °C), the land cools slightly (26–29 °C), tourist numbers drop, and prices fall by 20 to 30 percent from the first week of the month onward. Early October can still surprise with 24–26 °C days, but the first autumn rains usually arrive in the second half.

March and April are free of tourism, the landscape is green and walking weather, but the sea is still cold (15–18 °C) and most beach services are not yet open.

Things to see and do

The monasteries of Mount Athos by boat from Ouranoupoli - the most distinctive experience of the region. Half-day cruises run along the western coast, the guide explains the history of each monastic community, and there are swimming stops along the way.

Petralona Cave to the west of Thessaloniki has guided tours of a prehistoric site with cave formations - a good half-day trip on a day when the heat makes beach time uncomfortable.

Thessaloniki itself - the White Tower, the Byzantine walls, Aristotelous Square, and the tavernas of Ladadika. Ninety kilometres from Kassandra, it is the standard cultural day trip.

Fishing villages on Sithonia - Vourvourou, Sarti, Nikiti - offer fresh fish and meze at fair prices. If you order fish, ask the per-kilogram price before committing.

Quad or jeep safaris through the interior of the peninsulas - a fun way to reach beaches that are not accessible by car. Local operators run half-day and full-day routes.

Pricing - what to expect

Accommodation: a four-person apartment runs 50 to 120 € per night in the shoulder season (June, September), 70 to 180 € at peak (July, August). Half-board four-star hotels start at around 90 € per person in shoulder, all-inclusive five-star from 130 € per person.

Average weekly cost per person (accommodation, transfer, basic meals) is around 350 to 550 € in the shoulder season, 500 to 800 € at peak. Travelling by car instead of flying can save 100 to 150 €.

Taverna meals: a main course (fish, meat, gyros) is 8 to 14 €, salad 4 to 6 €, glass of house wine 3 to 5 €. Supermarket prices are slightly higher than in the Balkans except for olive oil and cheeses, which are cheaper.

Sun beds with parasol on an organised beach: 8 to 15 € per day for a pair, depending on location and season. Wild beaches are free but bring your own shade.

Frequently asked questions

Is Halkidiki suitable for families with young children? Yes. Shallow sandy entries on most Kassandra and Sithonia beaches, pediatric care available in larger towns, and hotels with kids' pools and animation make Halkidiki one of the most popular family destinations on the mainland.

What is the difference between Kassandra and Sithonia? Kassandra is more developed, with larger hotels, organised entertainment, and busier beach towns. Sithonia is quieter and greener, better for villas and private rentals, with more untouched beaches. Mount Athos is not a stay destination - it is visited by boat.

Are there direct flights from Belgrade to Thessaloniki? Yes, during the May to October season Air Serbia and several low-cost carriers operate direct flights. Flight time is 1 hour 15 minutes. The best fares come from booking two to three months ahead.

Is renting a car worth it? For a group of three or four, definitely. The three peninsulas have very different feels and a car lets you reach the wild beaches on Sithonia as well as day trips to Thessaloniki. Travellers staying inside one resort can manage with local buses and taxis.

Does all-inclusive make sense in Halkidiki? It depends on what you value. All-inclusive offers a predictable budget and convenience for families with small children. The trade-off is missing out on the local tavernas, which are one of the best parts of a Greek holiday. Many experienced travellers choose half-board or breakfast-only instead.
