The Magic of Thassos — A Guide to Discovering the Island
Thassos (Θάσος) is a unique island in the northern Aegean — green, golden-beached and astonishingly close to Serbia. A guide to exploring it properly.

Thassos (Θάσος) is a special island. In the northern Aegean, just 35 minutes by ferry from the mainland, it combines the lush greenery of an Ionian island with the gold-sand beaches more typical of the Cyclades. Unusually for a Greek island, the interior is forested — pine, olive and plane trees — with mountain villages that feel a world away from the coast.
Island Highlights
Limenas — The Capital
Limenas is the island's main port and capital. Unusually for Greece, the town has significant ancient ruins within walking distance of the harbour: an agora, theatre, temples and sections of the ancient city walls. The small Archaeological Museum is excellent. The harbour itself is beautiful — a horseshoe bay with a tree-lined promenade.
Beaches
Golden Beach (Hrisi Ammoudia) — 3 km of fine golden sand on the island's east coast. The island's most popular and most celebrated beach. Arrive early in July–August.
Paradise Beach (Paradeisos) — A smaller cove south of Golden Beach; pine trees to the shore, clear water, relaxed atmosphere.
Marble Beach (Saliara) — A tiny, extraordinary beach of white marble pebbles (access by boat or a 30-minute hike). The white marble against the deep blue sea is remarkable.
Psili Ammos — Fine white sand in the south-east, accessible by a forest path. Very beautiful and less visited.
Mountain Villages
Theologos — The island's former capital in the Byzantine era, preserved in traditional style with stone houses and a central square with a large plane tree. The village produces excellent local honey.
Kazaviti — The greenest village on the island. A stream runs through the stone-paved alleys. Almost entirely traditional architecture. Highly recommended.
Panagia — Cascading stone houses and a square with a fountain. Good tavernas serving traditional food.
The Island Circuit
Thassos is small enough (100 km perimeter) to drive round in a single day. The circuit road passes through all the main villages, beaches and viewpoints. Rent a car from Limenas.
