Thassos is the island that few know about, but everyone who visits wants to return. Golden sand, ancient ruins and a short ferry crossing from the mainland.

Thassos island — golden sand beach and Aegean Sea

Thassos is the Greek island that those in the know guard jealously. The northernmost island in the Aegean, just a 35-minute ferry crossing from the mainland port of Keramoti near Kavala, it combines everything Greece is famous for — golden sand, crystal water, pine forests, ancient ruins and outstanding food — without the overwhelming tourist infrastructure of the more famous islands.

Why Thassos Is Special

  • Green and lush — unlike the arid Cycladic islands, Thassos is forested with pine, olive and chestnut trees that reach almost to the shoreline
  • Golden sand beaches — Golden Beach (Hrisi Ammoudia) and Skala Potamias are among the finest golden-sand beaches in northern Greece
  • Marble — the island has been quarried for marble for 3,000 years; the "Marble Beach" (Saliara) has white marble pebbles instead of sand
  • Short journey — the closest Greek island to Serbia: drive to Kavala (650 km) and take a 35-minute ferry
  • Ancient ruins — the ancient agora, theatre and temples in Limenas Town are compact, walkable and largely undiscovered by mass tourism

Best Experiences

Golden Beach — 3 km of fine golden sand along a sheltered bay. Shallow entry, crystal water, good facilities, tavernas and sunbeds. The island's signature beach.

Mountain villages — Theologos (the former Byzantine capital), Kazaviti (stone houses, stream through the village) and Panagia (fountain square, plane trees). All worth a half-day excursion.

Ancient Thassos — In Limenas Town, the ancient theatre is still used for summer performances; the ancient agora, Artemis temple and city walls are all walkable from the harbour.

Aliki — a twin-beach headland in the south with ancient marble quarries and a small Byzantine church built into the rock.

Practical Information

  • Ferry from Keramoti: 35 minutes, frequent departures year-round
  • Ferry from Kavala port: 70 minutes, less frequent
  • Drive the island circuit: approximately 100 km, manageable in a day
  • Accommodation available in all villages from budget studios to comfortable hotels
