Halkidiki - Complete Holiday Guide 2026
Halkidiki is the most popular Greek destination for visitors from Serbia - just 700 km from Belgrade, three peninsulas, crystal-clear beaches and great food. Everything you need to know for 2026.

Halkidiki is the most popular Greek peninsula for summer holidays - and rightly so. Located just 700 km from Belgrade, this three-pronged peninsula in northern Greece offers crystal-clear beaches, rich cuisine, warm Aegean waters and excellent accommodation at every price point.
Why Halkidiki? 5 Reasons Visitors Keep Coming Back
- Driveable - No ferry, no flight; just 6–8 hours by car from Belgrade or Sofia
- Three peninsulas - Kassandra (lively, family-friendly), Sithonia (peaceful nature) and Athos (monasteries)
- Long season - May to October; the sea stays warm well into autumn
- Affordable - Wider choice of accommodation than on the islands
- Close to Thessaloniki - Greece's second city makes a superb day trip
The Three Peninsulas
Kassandra - First Peninsula
The most developed and most visited. Beaches like Hanioti, Pefkohori, Polychrono and Sani are well-maintained with every facility. Ideal for families with children, couples and groups of friends.
Sithonia - Second Peninsula
Quieter, greener, more authentic. Coves at Kalamitsi, Toroni and Porto Koufo are among the most beautiful on all of Halkidiki. Perfect for those escaping the crowds.
Athos - Third Peninsula
Mount Athos - an autonomous monastic republic. Women cannot enter. Men may visit with a special permit (diamonitirion).
Road Route from Belgrade to Halkidiki
Belgrade → Niš → Leskovac → Preševo → Evzonoi (border) → Thessaloniki → Halkidiki. Around 700 km total, 7–8 hours' drive.

Kassandra - Best Beaches
Hanioti - the most popular beach on Kassandra. Long sandy shore, shallow turquoise water, ideal for families. The beach has sun loungers, bars and restaurants; the town is lively at night.
Pefkohori - pine forest meets sea. Calm, family-friendly and one of the cleanest beaches on the peninsula. Good value accommodation nearby.
Sani - luxury enclave with an eco-marina, top-tier resorts and an annual music festival. If you have the budget, unforgettable.
Polychrono - quiet and intimate, with an attractive seafront promenade. Excellent for couples and older travellers.
Sithonia - Untouched Beauty
Vourvourou - a bay that looks like it was built for Instagram. Small islands, crystal-clear shallow water. Boat hire recommended.
Kalamitsi - one of the most beautiful coves in Halkidiki. Sheltered by pine hills, crystal-clear sea and very few tourist facilities - pure nature.
Porto Koufo - a deep natural harbour almost enclosed by hills. Calm water even when the wind blows elsewhere. Great for families with small children.
Thessaloniki - Day Trip from Halkidiki
Thessaloniki is only 60–90 minutes from most Halkidiki resorts - a perfect day trip. Unmissables: the White Tower, Aristotelous Square, the Old Town (Ano Poli) and the Archaeological Museum. The street-food scene (bougatsa, koulouri, souvlaki) is arguably the best in Greece.

Excellent. Kassandra in particular has shallow beaches, excellent infrastructure and lots of water sports. Porto Koufo on Sithonia is ideal for toddlers.
Which peninsula is the quietest?
Sithonia is significantly quieter and more natural than Kassandra. Athos is the most remote but has no tourist accommodation (only the monastic guesthouses for permit holders).
When is the best time to visit?
June and September offer warm weather, fewer crowds and lower prices. July–August is high season with the sea at its warmest but also the busiest.
