Halkidiki — aerial view of the three peninsulas and Aegean Sea

Halkidiki is the most popular Greek holiday destination for visitors from Serbia, North Macedonia and Bulgaria — and with good reason. The three-fingered peninsula in northern Greece offers an extraordinary variety of holiday experiences within a 700 km drive from Belgrade: organised family beaches, secluded natural coves, world-class seafood, Byzantine monasteries and Greece's second city (Thessaloniki) as a day trip.

The Three Peninsulas

Kassandra — The First Peninsula

The most developed and most visited of the three. The western coast (Sani, Kallithea) has luxury resorts and marinas; the eastern coast (Hanioti, Pefkohori, Polychrono) has excellent family beaches and a wide range of accommodation at more moderate prices. Lively nightlife in Hanioti and Skala Foukas.

Sithonia — The Second Peninsula

Quieter, less developed and much more naturally beautiful than Kassandra. The coves of Kalamitsi, Toroni, Porto Koufo and Vourvourou are among the most beautiful in Greece — crystalline water, pine forests descending to the sea, almost no commercial development. The best choice for those who value nature and quiet over facilities.

Athos (Mount Athos) — The Third Peninsula

The autonomous monastic republic of Mount Athos occupies the third peninsula and is closed to general tourism. Women cannot enter. Men must obtain a special permit (diamonitirion) through official channels months in advance. The boat trip around the Athos peninsula (departing from Ouranoupolis) is accessible to everyone — a 3-hour cruise along the coast with views of the Byzantine monasteries.

Best Beaches on Halkidiki

  • Hanioti (Kassandra) — long sandy beach, shallow water, lively town, excellent family choice
  • Pefkohori (Kassandra) — calm and clean, pine trees near the shore
  • Kalamitsi (Sithonia) — sheltered cove, crystal water, natural setting
  • Vourvourou (Sithonia) — a bay dotted with small islands, perfect for snorkelling
  • Porto Koufo (Sithonia) — deep natural harbour, calm water, ideal for families with toddlers

Thessaloniki — Essential Day Trip

Thessaloniki (60–90 minutes from most Halkidiki resorts) is Greece's second city and arguably its most interesting for food. The White Tower, the Byzantine walls, the Ano Poli (Upper Town) and the Rotunda are the main historical sights. The street food (bougatsa, koulouri, souvlaki) and the covered market are unmissable.
