About Kavala
Why Kavala?
Kavala is a port and cultural city in eastern Macedonia, about 160 km east of Thessaloniki, and the main gateway to Thassos. Many Balkan travellers use Kavala as a short stop before the ferry, but it is a destination in its own right - with an old acropolis descending to the sea, an Ottoman-era aqueduct, and a coastline stretching far on both sides of the city. A Kavala holiday in 2026 means combining cultural experiences with accessible Aegean beaches.
The character of the city is dual. The old quarter of Panagia climbs the hill above the harbour, with stone houses, small churches and restored old buildings - authentic Mediterranean. The modern part has a busy seafront promenade, waterfront restaurants and a yacht marina. Accommodation and food prices are among the most affordable in northern Greece.
The position is strategic: 20 minutes from Kavala airport (KVA), 20 minutes from the Thassos ferry port, 30 km from ancient Philippi. Ideal for travellers who want day trips without moving accommodation.
Beaches and the sea
The Kavala coastline runs about 30 km in each direction. Batis beach (3 km west of the centre) is an organised sandy beach with sun beds, pools and tavernas - popular with locals too. Kalamitsa sits between Kavala and Karyanti, smaller, less dense.
Tosca and Iraklitsa (15 to 20 km east) have long sandy beaches with hotels in the front row. This is the resort area of the region, with family apartments.
Nea Peramos (40 km west) is less touristy, with a beach almost 2 km long. Far quieter than the eastern beaches.
The water in the Kavala bay is generally calm with a sandy bottom - ideal for families. Water quality is good though not at Thassos levels (clean Aegean) due to the proximity of the port.
Where to stay
Kavala centre - hotels and apartments with views over the harbour and acropolis. Picked for travellers who want a city ambience close to the beach (Batis is 5 minutes by car).
Iraklitsa and Nea Iraklitsa (10 to 15 km east) - a resort area with direct beach access. Apartments with kitchens, smaller hotels. Ideal for families who want the coast, not the city.
Nea Karyani and Karyani (west) - smaller resorts with family apartments and quiet beaches.
Panagia old town - boutique accommodation in historic houses, for couples who value atmosphere over beach.

Getting there
From Belgrade - 850 km by motorway (Đevđelija, Promahonas). 9 to 11 hours with breaks. After Thessaloniki the A2 motorway runs to Kavala in 90 minutes.
Air: Kavala airport (KVA, "Megas Alexandros") receives seasonal flights from Belgrade with Wizz Air and occasionally Ryanair, flight time 1 hour 15 minutes. Airport–centre transfer 15 minutes by taxi (20 to 25 €) or local bus.
Ferries: not a departure point for Kavala-bound passengers, but if you arrive from Thassos, the incoming ferry disembarks directly at the city port.
Direct bus from Belgrade in season, 11 to 13 hours. Useful for travellers without a car who plan Kavala as a base for Thassos.
Best time to visit
May - cool, sea 18–20 °C, land 22–26 °C. Ideal for walking the old town and museums.
June - summer mode starts. Sea 21–23 °C, land 26–30 °C. The first beaches fill up.
July and August - peak. Sea 24–26 °C, land 30–34 °C. The city centre is busy in the evening, coastal beaches full. Many Greek tourists come here for a week or two.
September - excellent. Sea 23–25 °C, land 26–29 °C. Less crowded, prices ease, restaurants still operating.
October - first half good for the city and area, second half slides into off-season. The airport operates year-round.
Things to see and do
Ancient Philippi (15 km north) - a UNESCO site, one of Greece's most significant archaeological complexes. Ancient theatre, early Christian churches, mosaics. The Apostle Paul preached here - significant for religious history.
The Kavala acropolis and fortress - Byzantine and Ottoman fortifications with views over the whole city and Thassos in the distance. A 15-minute walk uphill from the centre.
The Kamares aqueduct (16th century) - an Ottoman aqueduct that crosses the city centre, one of Kavala's iconic visual landmarks.
Kavala Archaeological Museum - collections from Philippi, the ancient Greek colonies on the northern Aegean, and prehistoric finds from the surrounding region.
The Mehmed Ali house - the birthplace of the founder of the modern Egyptian dynasty, born in Kavala in 1769. A museum with exhibits from the Ottoman era.
Day trip to Thassos - without an overnight on the island, just a day with swimming and lunch in Limenas (around 20 € for a return ticket).

Is Kavala better as a base than Thassos? Depends on the goal. Kavala is for those who want culture, beaches and day trips (Thassos, Philippi, Drama, Komotini). Thassos is for those who want only the sea and quiet, without an urban setting.
How often does the ferry to Thassos run? From Kavala port - every 1 to 2 hours in season, 40-minute crossing. From Keramoti (40 minutes by car east of Kavala) - every 30 to 60 minutes, 20-minute crossing. Keramoti is the cheaper option.
Is ancient Philippi worth a visit? Definitely for travellers who value history. One of Greece's most significant archaeological sites, with good exhibits and restored mosaics. A half-day visit is optimal.
Are there good family beaches in Kavala? Yes - Batis (5 km west), Iraklitsa (15 km east). Both organised with sandy bottoms and shallow entry. For the prettiest beaches, take the ferry to Thassos.
Is renting a car worth it? For stays longer than 3 days - yes. A car unlocks Philippi, beaches on both sides of Kavala, and a Thassos day trip with the vehicle. Rental 30 to 50 € per day at the airport or in the centre.
